No, you have to read through the whole page. The free item is free even without buying anything else.

You may be right, the one on Scallywag promo page was "Tai Chi and Everyday Poses and Expressions for Mei Lin 8 and Genesis 8 Female(s)" and now that I have "bought" it, I no longer see the thumbnail for it, but the text is still there.

...or you can always just sort the shop by price low to high. All the freebies show up first. No searching necessary.
