How to Create Skin Shaders using Real Photos?

I understand how to manipulate the shaders to get basic real looking skin but I would like to make my own custom skin shaders using real photo references in Photoshop (or any paint program) to get some added realism to my figures. I'm looking for a tutorial on this process. Does anyone know of any info on how it's done?

That's not shader making, it's texture making. If you search on that you should find a lot of guides, in various formats and both free and not.

Once you have your textures sorted out you could probably create something using either ShaderMixer, AoA's subsurface shader, HSS or Uber...just need to decide which type of shaders you want to use.

Thanks for the clarity. I was actually able to open a dae figure in photoshop cs6 and play with the textures. The only thing I'm worried about is having consistency with all the body parts. I really would like to do uv unwrapping on the figures and be able to manipulate the texture on broader levels. But it's a start.
So what's the biggest differences in AoA vs HSS or Uber? On one hand I don't want my skins too bright and cartoony wet looking and on the other hand don't want my skins looking like toy dolls with perfect skin. Guess I have a lot of reading to do.

If you want to use a uv map then you should be able to grab templates from Snow Sultan if it's a Daz figure...sorry I don't have the links.

In regards to the different shaders try some of the presets you have for different characters and decide which you think looks best then have a look in the surfaces tab and see what settings they have used. Yes, it will take a while to get a hang of it...there should be some tutorials in the new users forum that NeilV set up some time back that may be worth a look at least as a starting point. I'm not sure if they have been updated to include AoA's shader but there should be info on his own site iirc...

Thanks so much Cho! I'm sadly lacking in the links department as I lost a lot when I changed over computers. It was deliberate as I had way too many and wanted to start again...many were out of date.

I had saved the bookmarks but decided that it would be good to start afresh...New hard drive. ..time to rethink kind of deal. There was an awful lot of crap bookmarked and I was to lazy to go through each bookmark. *shrugs, sometimes it's good to start again. I tend to send pages to onenote to make sure I can find them again.
