Extremely long save Times for Material presets

Hi. After a long long time I have returend to creating DAZ Studio freebies. I am in the work on some. But I have a problem: When i save a Material or LIE Preset, it takes 15 Minutes to save just one preset. The DUF file is created withing second. Then DAZ Studio stays unresponsive for at least 10 to 15 Minutes, after that, i can save the next prestet. As i have 10 - 20 Presets for each piece of clothing, i have hours only to save them. Does anybody know why this happens? There is no difference if i compress them or not. My whole library is on an external harddisk, but its a very fast USB, so that should not be a problem. Any advice on how i could speed up the process (or create andalter the duf files manually without saving them inside DAZ Studio itself) would be very apreciated.

Kind Regards

Beat

Checking your log file is Step #1 to solving long load times in Daz Studio. So what does yours say?

    Hi Margrave

Thanks for the Tip. Instersting ist, the log shows only the saving, that take about a minute. So it looks like the non responsive part is not due to DAZ Studio. Mabe I try to deactivate some plugins I don't need at the moment and see, if it is for example Octane of Fluidos that need lot of ressources (or conflict with iray) or something like that.

A minute still sounds way too long for a material preset, though it's understandable for an LIE since that's slow AF.

Does the log file explain what the program is doing for the nine minutes after it successfully saves? If there's a long gap in time, usually whatever comes next is the culprit.

This has been happening to me as well. Hierarchical Material Presets save quite quickly. But material presets takes around a minute. Saving over a material preset is quick though, so there's something going on when a material preset is saved for the first time.

What are your system specs? My load and save times, and preset saving times, were much quicker after I went to DD4. Also a SSD might be quicker than a HDD.

I have a good system, this issue cropped up recently-ish. Around 3 months or so, I believe. I know it isn't related to incompatibility with other products because I only save materials on a daz build that has only the essentials installed to avoid contamination when building products. That said, the strange thing is that it only happens when saving material presets (again, hierarchical mat presets save in seconds) and only the first time around. Saving over a mat file (after tweaking it, let's say) saves it fast (like how it used to be).

If the material preset file ends up being exeptionally large, one could look what information is stored inside. I remember looking at some that had tons of octane related information in them.

I have had this issue for years. And, not just with Materials nor on one system. Poses, Scene Subsets, Shaping, you name it. It seems to coincide with things that have many, many saves of its kind. For instance, saving a Scene doesn't have this issue (though it's beginning to happen with the more Scenes I save). It's gradual, then it becomes 5, 10, 15 seconds. The worst offenders have this pause of about 10-15 seconds after the inital save and thumbnail are complete (usually takes less than a second for these). Overwriting doesn't have this problem. Specs have nothing to do with it, because I've experienced it across several different builds. It's something specific to DAZ Studio, particularly folders mapped to the Base Directory.  Outside of that, when I save, there is no issue. So, it's something going on there and no one at either DAZ nor users have found a solution. It is easily the most intrusive part of my workflow.

It's broughht up more extensively here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/425886/slow-saving-and-loading-but-only-inside-the-daz-studio-folder-structure
