Minimal system requerimets to work confortably with G8 and Iray.

Hi,

I´d like to ask you some tips to buy a new pc to work with genesis 8 models and Iray.

I use to do scenes with multpiple characters, so this is more demanding in resources than just simple "pin up" scenes with just 1 model on screen.

So i´m looking to do such scenes in a reasonable time of render and avoid  collapses and slowdowns.

Any comment will be welcomed.

Thanks.

"Minimal requirements" and "work comfortably" means getting two computers.

Nvidia 3060 (non-Ti) which has 12GB's of VRAM and minimum 32GB's of RAM on the motherboard, should allow "working comfortably"

    why not "Ti"?

3060 Ti has just 8GB's of VRAM and even though 8GB's is mostly enough today, it will not be enough for long.

If you run out of VRAM, the GPU could be replaced with a generic 50 USD display card, it would be just as fast and usefull

    This is my actual pc:

    -Interl Core i5 6400

    -Gforce GTX 1050 Ti 4G

    -16GB Ram DDR

This allows me to render 2 G8 figures on screen with not heavily loaded enviroment in around 2h to 2h and half at medium resolution (1200x960 pixels)

My objetive is can render scenes with 2-4 g8 figures in this or less time, or 2g8 in around 30 minutes, for example.

So I´m not sure if should go for a new complete pc or is enought just updating graphic card, ram or micro.

Sounds like you are rendering on CPU.

This is still a bad time to buy computers and components, I would just update the GPU and double the RAM to 32GB's and you should be able to render "2 G8 figures on screen with not heavily loaded enviroment" in 15 minutes

    Thanks for your replies. Perttia.

Doing a little projection for the future, would you recommend investing around 1,5k € in a new powerful equipment or simply updating these two components would be more than enough?
I also want toavoid incompatibilities between different components  and gets the best permomance... that's my question.

1.5k eur is not much if talking about power. I have planned on updating my system this summer and I'm looking to spend 1.2-1.4k eur for just the motherboard and the processor (i9 processor+X266 motherboard) - If I was building the whole computer, it would be around 3.5k eur

The 3060 12GB would be usable if you went and bought a whole computer later and even if the RAM could not be used, 32GB's (or 16GB's) is not that expensive anyways, so just get the new GPU and update the RAM and see what kind of performance boost you get - I think the situation will be quite different next spring/summer with MS releasing Win 11 and Intel already being a year late with their next HEDT platform (High End Desk Top)

Annotation from me: the 3060 Ti has 4864 Cuda Cores, the 3060 12 GB has "only" 3584 Cuda Cores. So I think in most cases the Ti would be faster.

The extra cuda cores are worth nothing if you run out of VRAM.

I have a RTX 2070 Super 8GB that I bought a year ago and the renders are usually done in 10-20 minutes. If more cuda cores would shave 20% off of the rendering time, I wouldn't even notice, but if the render dropped to CPU due to running out of VRAM and took 2-4 hours to finish, that would be a major issue.

Yes, as long as the scene fits into 8GB. If the scene fits into 12GB but not 8GB then the slower card will be used and will beat the CPU render on a system with the faster card - it depends on how big your scenes get, and what else you want to do with the card.

I have an RTX 3060 with 12gb plus16gb system ram. So far it has rendered complex scenes with 5 or 6 G8s on a starship bridge, planets outside window etc well within 15 minutes at that resolution...

I have one System with a RTX 2060 Super 8 GB and another with a RTX 3070 8 GB. Rendertime with the 3070 is half the Time of the 2060.

RAM = yes you can't have enough. But some stuff won't render with 6, 8 or 12 GB - in that case I identify "the problem product" and use another one. (In most cases some hair, in a few cases skin).

NS: I don't have a 12 GB GPU but I can test this renders on a PC from a friend

I also have a old system with a GTX 1070 Ti. (Rendertime is double the time of the 2060).

The Radeon RX 6700 will not do, you need to have a Nvidia GPU to render Iray with the GPU, for a budget system the RTX 3060 (12GB) is the one to choose.
