Is it possible to move two figures at once, together, locked in a pose? x,y, and z planes?

To move the figures at the same time they would need to be parented to one another.

Create a group containing both figures

When (if) you start posing figures, you may want to see if Hierarchical Pose Presets might also be useful in projects.

Personally I parent them both to a null.

I usually create a primitive plane in DS, and then parent the two characters to the plane. The principle is the same as grouping or parenting to a null. Then just hide the plane at render time. An added advantage of the plane is, if the pose has the characters standing on the plane, you can move the plane around, and position it flat with the floor, and the contact point is already dealt with, their feet are flush with the floor, saves a bit of time.

I tend to use the Null approach as well for a single control for multiple items. However, I have found that the Grouping feature has the advantage of being able to hide/show all of the objects in the group at once by using show/hide on the Group. I haven't tried this but perhaps a melding of using Group and Null together might have some advantages.

As for the using the "plane" approach, WOW! That idea has so many possibilities that I will be exploring shortly. Thanks FirstBastion!
