Changing the axis of rotation for a solid or a prop?

Good afternoon, I am hoping that someone will be able to help me.

I have some props that seem to have their "center"(?) located a long way away from the prop's main mass. What can i do to change my own "center" for a prop to make it easier to translate and rotate?

For example, I have a spear with the "center" at the base and I would like to move that up to the middle.
I know that this would play havoc with any poses for that particular object (if it came with any that is).

Use the Joint Editor tool to move the centre point (green) by dragging it in the viewport or with the sliders in the Tool Settings pane.

TIP: I find doing what Richard suggested by using the Orthographic cameras. Make life a lot easier IMHO.
