What is a Chromebook?

What exactly is a Chromebook? Can it run DS and/or blender on it? I found an offer for a hundred off a Chromebook and was wondering if that is a good deal?

No, it won't run DS. I would not be sure it would run Blender, at least well.

For some reason Chromebooks tend to give me this bad feeling. I feel like they are just cheap. If I want cheap os I would want Ubuntu I guess.

They are not "just cheap", they are specialised tools.

Okay I'll look at the link. I don't know much about Chromebooks.

In a nutshell you could say that Chromebooks don't have a proper OS and apps, they rely on online software services for most of what they do. The 'Chrome' in the name refers to the browser on which they are dependant. So definitely wouldn't work for intense stuff like 3d.

  • My understanding is that Chromebooks, or at least some Chromebooks, primarily use Android apps....  so, yeah, not a regular desktop OS on there.

Don't get a chromebook if you want to dl any software on it, like DS, MSword, Skype, photoshop, etc. They are super speedy laptops and perfect for people who use only android apps and online sites like google docs. Even the apps don't give a real app experience; rather it is like using the app in a web browser.

I wouldn't call them cheap I would call them quite expensive considering how under powered they are.

Next step up from an Android tablet. Basically the same thing with a bigger screen & off screen keyboard. So, they are capable computers merely crippled by the OS rather than by both OS and input methods. I do find it frustrating that tablets and the like are built around processors with better capabilities than many WinXP PCs of 15 years ago and you can't do 1/10th the stuff with them.

A chrome book, is a laptop that has an OS that's designed around running the Android version of chrome.  Just a simple little internet only device for people who don't need the functioality of an entire computer.

If by "cheap" you meant anything other than "inexpensive", you are quite misinformed about Ubuntu.

I'm glad that's what you mean. There are still people out there who think that Linux is somehow inferior either because it is free as in beer or free as in speech.

I used a chromebook from 2014 to early 2020. My experience:

    - great for Internet

    - Possible for writing a short text etc.

    - open it and it is ready, nearly no boot time

    - automatic updates for the OS in background

But at the end of 2019 I got a message that my chromebook is not supported longer. Suggestion due to security reason: buy a new one.

Oops I see your point. I didn't see it that way. It could be free as in free videos to watch on TV? You got to buy the TV in order to watch free stuff on it.

why do I subscribe to stuff if there is free stuff on TV? No clue?
