Struggling with Dforce tutorial

I'm working on a tutorial that involves using a sphere (helper object) to lift a cloth through a ring and then hang it down on the other side, so you end up with the effect of a piece of cloth draped through a ring. I've run the simulation over and over and I keep getting hung up on the same problem - the cloth has excessive momentum, as it's rising, it springs up and gathers around the ball, it looks like a combination of excessive momentum follow by an insane amount of static cling. Attempts to alter the surface settings often result in explosions. Can anyone suggest what's going wrong here? thanks.

It looks to me, as you need more frames when pulling the cloth through the ring, to give the cloth more time to settle, so it don't hit the upper part of the ring.

    That did help, thank you.
