ok, will get DS4.5...so what about the texture files for the car, by Moyra, I also bought that will not work in DS3. They are .pz2 files, a long time format. You click the icon...nothing.

Music, are there actually any texture files that are in the old format? Next question, did you look at the pz2 file with a text editor? Even Notepad will do. I've done this before to find texture paths that were perhaps not properly formatted:

Do a search for the word "texturemap". The value will point to the path where the texture files are, and the filename. Perhaps it's only pointing to DS material files that are in the new format. Repeat the search until no more are found.

ok...so what about the texture files for the car, by Moyra, I also bought that will not work in DS3. They are .pz2 files, a long time format. You click the icon...nothing. So I guess it's just a guessing game at this point. Would have loved to know that the DS4 files were not going to work in DS4 before I bought them and went through all that time battling with my antivirus while it was deleting the .exe files each time it downloaded one because they were new files. That also is a guessing game. Excuses...hum. I say, if you are going to market a product for financial gain from the public, it should at least work, in one version, if not all, and you should be able to download it without putting your antivirus into a spin. Sorry, but I think that is only a fair exchange for money spent.

Do you expect Office 2010 to work in Windows 95? How about 98? Hmmm, let's try Windows2000. Want to know what's coming in October?

No, but he expects a pz2 to work in DS3! They are not new formats, pz2's! He also expects the packager to get things sorted properly before trying to sell it! I agree with his expectations!

If the .PZ2 uses "new" items then "old" software isn't going to read it. Like .AVI or .ZIP, .PZ2 is just a type of container (actually it is a script that contains instructions on what to load). If an .AVI file contains a H.264 encoded video stream then an older version of Windows Media Player isn't going to play it. The .AVI file is still the same format as the older .avi container that previously was readable by that version of the Media Player, but it now contains content that isn't playable by the viewer. .PZ2 files are the same thing. If they instruct the program to read content that is not compatible, then the file "will not load." One should not expect DS3 to load anything new consistently anymore, just as one should not expect Poser7 to load content for Poser9 or PPro2012.

It is due to exactly this type of situation that I advocated that DAZ move to a CMS only mode for the new software. Even though the old formats can "handle" the job, the old software can't. People can't, or won't, accept that. They tend to feel that if the file ends in .DOC then Office 95 should read it, even though it was written using Office 2010 features that didn't exist when Office 95 was written... and that's my point.

Hey now Music, it's not fair to blame an App (any app) for the failings of the OS... Blame the OS for NEEDING an anti-virus program in the first place. Then blame the anti-virus program for false positives. You know I use the Windows versions and never worry about Viruses, I've never had to run an anti-virus package to protect my Windows installs yet. I've been a MS developer since *way* before Windows existed, and the only time I've had viruses is when I *deliberately* installed them to track what they were doing to the poor saps who got infected. You know why? I don't allow Windows to do the things that allow it to get infected.

    Kendall

Well, not everyone has the knowledge that you have, as far as not letting Windows do what it does. And he was having trouble downloading the damn files, not installing them. Norton, and others, have a means for a company to tell them about new files, so that their anti-virus apps won't kill them when they are downloading, as far as I know. However, I haven't had the same trouble with any of the new files yet, and I'm using Norton Security Suite.

    Dana

That's true, and that's why I'm passing the information along. I can understand the frustration. I help people with that frustration everyday. But it boggles the mind... If one drives a car that they know doesn't have brakes, then they should expect to have problems stopping. Windows is that car. Everyone knows that Windows has no seatbelts, the seats aren't bolted down, the steering is off, and the lugs on the wheels are loose. But those issues are familiar. So people use duct tape, super glue, and coat hangers to hold everything together. Then they go and install a shiny new kick-butt sound system into the car... So why blame the company that made the radio when the car crashes? "I never had a problem with the car crashing BEFORE I installed the radio! Therefore it must have been the radio that caused the crash."

The situation is going to get worse, not better.

    Whirlwind Summer of Romance... Novels

Here is my entry for this month!
This summer I didn't really do anything exciting, no fun trips or adventures. I did, however, indulge in my newest guilty pleasure... reading romance novels. Now, I used to pass by the romance aisle in bookstores and wonder how anyone could read those trashy books, judging them without having actually read one myself. That all changed this summer when I decided to crack one open just for laughs, and it looks like the joke was on me. Now I can't get enough of these tawdry titles and the passion induced fever they ignite within my very core... Oh my, I'm getting the vapors just thinking about it. Anyhow... here is my render!

A quick render to say thanks to Shaaelia for the entry gift this month. I'd stored Apollo in the back room some time ago. He was very understanding.

"I know," he said. "Not as 'flexible' as Michael 4 and not as 'fun' as Michael 3."

But, man, was he happy to get called up again for service. Tried on his new identity and I said, "You know, we might be able to work something out here." Gonna get him a role in my next big movie.

Thank you! The lighting was a struggle, but I like how it turned out.
All of the entries so far are pretty good. It's fun to see how everyone interprets the theme.

I don't know if the contest is still on or not, but then again I'm not really entering it... I just got back from Caprinia... well, the Resort, not the palace. The original pavilion is gone now anyway and only the replica at the resort still exists.

This will be available as a Freebie soon... in a few days... still fixing it up a little.

This is a very well thought out piece. Very clean and uncluttered, with an almost photographic take on it. It looks very much like something you'd see in a college brochure to illustrate students going about their everyday business. The girl dancing on the table is a nice touch, although I'd think that the college administration would frown on that sort of activity. Insurance liabilities and all that...

My only minor quibble might be that the shadows are a bit dark, but that's just me...or my eyes. Overall though it's brilliantly executed with a very natural feel.

Did I not suceed? Should I have gone for non-photorealistic? :ohh:

Thanks for the comments, they are always welcome. Advice on this one would be greatly appreciated. :)

If I had done what I really wanted to have done, there would have been waa~ay too many paid-fors. Originally, there were eight more people at those tables, plus a basketball goal with students playing. :smirk:

I think it was a good job, Alexa. Although, the shadows' shortness indicates to me that it was nearly high noon. That actually does give quite harsh shadows. I couldn't say which direction we're looking, but with the shadows going slightly to one side, and knowing it's college campus time, I'd say it's about now in time, and the sun is slightly south, so she's walking in an easterly direction. Looks just right to me for that scenario. ;-)

I understand better what you were shooting for now that you've posted those two inspirational photos. To my way of thinking (and that's just me...as usual) there are two things that really suggest "early morning" in those photos: the length of the shadows and the lens flair of the sun shining through the trees (or whatever). Even at 8 or 9 o'clock (depending on your location on the earth, I guess) the sun tends to cast rather long shadows especially from tall buildings. Unlike Bryce, which can place the sun where ever you want it for any particular time of day, I'd guess that Studio (and Poser) would have to rely on multiple light sources with the shadows turned off or on depending on the effect. That, I'm afraid, is way beyond my understanding in either of the two programs, so I'll leave that up to those people who frequent the forum that are far more knowledgeable than I...or than me...whichever is correct.

The lens flair effect is pretty much out as an effect (so far as I know) in any of the programs. There are several lens flair brushes for Photoshop and/or GIMP that can be used to retouch a finished render, or placed on a transparent 2D flat and placed inside the actual render. Both effects look, at least to me, look phony. I could never get it to work to my satisfaction.

That being said, there's not a dang thing wrong with your render, so don't do what I usually do and pick it apart until it bleeds and dies a horrible death! I'm the absolute worst at "overworking" a piece until it ends up as cluttered garbage...just look back at some of the stuff I've entered here! I say it fine...wonderful, in fact. Be satisfied with it, walk away and go on to the next one. Just remember...Art is never finished, it's just taken away.

...and let's not get into that discussion of "what is art?" again...please? (insert whining sound here).

I'm sorry you took it wrong Alexa, i DO like your lighting,I think maybe it's the lack of color to the lighting I was referring to. It seems a little off to me because the sun doesn't do such a grayish tone to things and your render is sort of grayish to the lighting. I think you did an excellent job at getting the shadows right and I think you got it just right in that respect.

So Krissy will be hosting the September challenge. She will release the theme in her intro. Donations are welcome.

Sorry to upset the fun Cho...not like me to do that. That was not my intention. I was just frustrated. It just seems that since the change over, I have all these problems getting stuff I buy now, that I did not have before. That is why I assumed it was not my OS,but the software and/or site. I downloaded the 4.5 upgrade and it solved the problem. So...it was NOT the OS. It was the updated software. Like I said, I didn't have this problem before the new site changeover. It's all ok now, but the MAT files still won't work in DS3...LOL.

I will try to be around more next month. My clinic business has just exploded! I have doubled my patient intake last month. Everyone is in pain! I think that just bad health, obeasity, stress, money problems, etc. are all to blame for it. All of it together can make you feel real bad and sick....tell them DanaT! You got to roll with it now days. Get tough.

Hope we can all have some fun next month. I think BWSman is a saint for helping out this month, with me not here most of it. He has not even complained once about it. We could all learn something about patience and just being an adult from him. That is why I made him my main man (ETO). Thanks so much BWSman.

Inspired by type O negative song....hmm, not sure about that, but did you know that there was quite a learned discourse by someone who suggested that People with type O negative blood are descended from the gods, ( or extra terrestial visitors that the indigenous people of long ago thought were gods)

I, of course, am type O negative. :coolsmirk:

I've been a little busy the last couple of days to do more than lurk. Here's what's keeping me busy.

It's a texture set for mamomamo's T-shirt Set for V4 that I will be giving as a prize for this month.
