It seems like Daz's idea of a bridge is throwing a diffuse texture on an hdr material and calling it a day, removing any normal, alpha, sss, etc. Are there any available options that actually import those maps correctly or guides for setting up the materials manually? Adding normal maps and opacity isn't too complicated but I'm struggling with setting things like sss up as I don't have much experience with hdr materials.

The bridge is poor, especially compared to the more popular children bridges (but then I think that's because they procured good hobbyist bases on the others or a merignue).
I don't have any issues with the maps coming through, if the maps were there they came though on the few attempts I tried. I don't think it's been updated, so if you are in Unity 2020 that may be your problem, I only used it with 2019 LTS.
I've just run some test on August 8.1 and a Standard 8 figure in 2019 LTS and 2020 LTS.... Both are totally broken with only diffuse mats coming though as you stated. The Unity Bridge is just a totally broken piece of garbage unfortunately.
In the end though the fbx export works better for me!
Also look at 8.1 in the Rig Configuaration screen!!!!!!
