How do you pose unfitted shoes?

I find it difficult to use shoes on their own. They start in the default position, shoulder width, and have no independent translate/rotate controls.

For a pair standing in a store, you could put an invisible figure in them and pose the figure.

For a pair carelessly thrown into the sand, that would require painful contortions (IK does that happily, but never the way I want).

You could use two pairs and make one shoe of each invisible, but the surfaces are usually shared between left and right.

Are there any obvious tricks that I haven't figured out?

what I do is create a prop out of the rigged shoes (when the shoes don't load together) EDIT - FIGURE - RIGGING - CONVERT FIGURE TO PROP this allows for easier posing and you can save a copy for later use and even load more than one then.

If they load together, I just delete the polys on one shoe with the geometry editor and then  do the above again.
