Metadata update downloads blank thumbnails - deleting the empty images is not working

Hi everyone, I couldn't see an answer to this exact question. I apologise if I missed something.

I have never used DIM on this PC as I couldn't find a link to download it so everything was installed with Daz Connect. When I ran Daz, almost every product thumbnail in the smart content pane was blank, I would guess somewhere around 95%.

1 . I go into ...\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Daz Connect Library\data\cloud\meta and I see 799 images of 0 bytes. That's presumably the blank thumbnails.

2. I delete those images, leaving every other file intact.

3. I start Daz and the thumbnails are back, confirming that deleting those files does something... for a few seconds because almost immediately...

4 Daz does a metadata update and puts back all the 0 size images.

5. Almost my thumbnails vanish.

Has anyone had anything like this? I've searched the forum but most of the advice I've found is about missing thumbnails on specific products, or mismatches between DIM and Daz Connect which can't be the case here. Someone suggested putting them back by hand, but I have 800 of them so that's really not going to be practical.
