Is there a way to use G8F expressions on G3F?
Not to my knowledge. If you are willing to sink some effort into it, you could try this method to dial in an expression, export an .obj, import as a morph that relies on a single slider, then transfer that morph to G3. But I honestly don't know if that would work.
How would you edit the two overlapping smile morphs and change their labels in daz studio, on the character itself?
Has anyone run into any other problems so far In regards to this fix? Why did the DAZ developers do this? They must have a good reason why they disabled G8 expressions from being used on G8.1?
The short answer is that 8 and 8.1 have different bones in their mouth so that a dialed 8 smile is different than a 8.1 so that if you got a pose that used 30% 8 smile, it might not look very similar to 8.1. For a lot of people, they are close enough...
Definitely close enough. So far, the genesis 8 expressions look fantastic on 8.1. I'm so glad this solution exists.
Well, close so far but there will eventually be problems as people try to use expression sets that call on bones that don't exist. For example, Zeddicus has loads of expression sets which have dials that should work on 8.1 while the pose versions never will.
Interesting. I deleted the files in the folders you mentioned (they were in a cloud folder) and the expressions don't work. I see an option in the pose controls for Expressions 8 and Expression 8.1 The expressions under 8.1 work fine, the ones under 8 do not do anything (I double checked the product pages and those state they are compatible with 8.1) so I have to imagine it's something I'm doing. Any ideas?
I only use DIM, so my understanding of other install methods is very limited. But it's possible there are duplicates of these files in another location, especially if you log into your Daz account when you open Daz studio. I believe each install method is likely to install things to a different place, and logging in while using Daz studio will make these files download automatically. Hopefully, someone else can chime in with more info on this.
DAZ Connect installs to DAZ 3D/My Daz Connect Library. This is always leading to duplicate files if you had a product installed through DIM but downloaded an update through DAZ Connect. Not only it's making finding files harder (because this library takes priority over everything else), but also is wasting the disk space with larger files like textures.
One more reason to not use DAZ Connect for installing anything.
Why? It's a reason not to install two different ways but not to favour one method over another.
It's the method of installation creating this weird 1_Insertproductnumberhere folder structure for anything installed. Simply finding a texture you want to edit is too much hassle to bother with Daz Connect.
One reason is that it creates conflicts when people do not understand/know how the different installation methods are working and where they are installing the content => Several messages daily about the content not working from people not knowledgeable enough to troubleshoot the problem by themselves.
Connect installations with their obscure installation folders are also something you cannot figure out over the forum to help the ones with the problems.
I like Connect for the same reason - all the files are in one folder without any files from other products, makes it much easier to track things down. You are welcome to use whichever method best suits your needs, but other people may have other needs/priorities.
Daz can be confusing for new users though. I ended up with three separate content directories at one point, thankfully now rationalised to one, after working out what was going on.
Can't recall myself having power over what other method any other user is employing so it's personal choice anyway.
Having three different methods creating conflicts is not very end-user friendly, though. Especially when they install to different places unless manually directed to the same location.
Files being separated in non-descript folders for each product is making finding files easier, true. But only when they're in the same product. Not so much if you want to try different normals, bumps or anything else coming from different product.
Especially as there is no warning to installing/updating within "Smart" Content (DAZ Connect)
Ok, I tried uninstalling the Genesis 8 essentials and then installing them with the Installer instead of Connect, except when I did I looked at the filepath and it appeared to get saved back to the Cloud folders.
Also, the products I can't get to work on the 8.1 explicitly say on their product page that they work with 8.1. What should I try next?
You need to hunt down and remove any instances of these files. So if you just reinstalled essentials, that's going to be at least one place to remove. Check your C drive, cloud folders, and any other drive where you keep Daz content. If you are signing into Daz studio when you open the program, you will have to stop if you really want to get these expressions working.
As for the products having incorrect info, this happens a lot. You can (and should) put in a ticket. But the most likely outcome will be that the page is changed, not the product. And that's if they do anything at all. From what I understand, there are a ton of old products in the store that won't work with Daz 4.15, but the product pages list that as the compatible software. This is because the version number automatically changes on all product pages whenever Daz releases a new iteration. Perhaps the 8.1 compatibility is similar, and 8.1 compatibility is being added by default.
Note: If these expressions came out after 8.1 came out, then they really should work with that figure, and I would strongly urge you to put in a ticket.
Thank you for this topic. I had trouble getting it to work. I had the "cloud" issue, so I thought I'd spell it out here in a lil more detail for anyone else struggling.
I have the DAZ 3D program installed on my C:Drive
C:\Daz 3D\Applications\Data\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library\data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Female 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D
I did the steps in OP, and it had no effect.
However, I have a custom library where I install all the free stuff I find, and that's in a separate location. For me it's my primary library.
Say If I download a file, and it has 'data' / 'people' / 'runtime' folders, the place where I put/unzip these files to is the location
[LOCATION] \data\cloud\1_42071\data\daz 3d\genesis 8\female 8_1\morphs\daz 3d
This is where I found secondary/duplicate versions of the folders mentioned in OP. Quickly followed OP's steps, and it worked like a charm. THANKS @certaintree38 !
I'm not sure what '1_42071' is referring to? Maybe a unique Daz ID for use with the store? But anyway be aware u might have to navigate manually rather than cut n paste the above.
Thanks for sharing this trick!
Got Visemes back as well, checked a bunch of expressions and it looks like everything works fine.
Worked great, thank you!!
Yeah, so I am a little late to the party I guess, but I struggled with what the OP posted too, did the same thing that felixmusdie said, and hid the files in the same location as he said in the "My Daz Connect Library" folder and it worked perfectly, so I can confirm that some users will have to do this. I have been installing nearly everything through DIM or Daz Central too, except for a few items here or there that I installed through connect. For some reason the 8.1 files and folders that the OP said to hide are in my "My Daz 3D Library" as well, I really don't know how they got both places unless Daz does it automatically because I am pretty sure I didn't install them there unless it was accidental. Evidently whatever is in the Daz Connect Library is indeed accessed first and whatever is there overrides whatever is anywhere else. The location in "My Daz Connect Library" was exactly the same as felixmustdie's [LOCATION] \data\cloud\1_42071\data\daz 3d\genesis 8\female 8_1\morphs\daz 3d, and then mail 8_1 for the male of course, so you might want to check for the folders here first because if you have them here then you will have to hide them here or they won't work no matter where else you hide them. If this was clarified in another thread already I'm sorry, but sometimes it's a little difficult to find everything written on a certain subject on these forums.
If you are installing content within Daz Studio (ie. using DAZ Connect), the content will be installed to a completely different folder structure than what is used by the other installation methods, which means that if you install both inside Daz Studio and DIM/Daz Central/Manually, you are using twice the storage space and still Daz Connect installed (often corrupted) content gets priority over (working) content that's installed by any other means.
Also if you want to change these files:
data/Daz 3D/Genesis 8/Female 8_1/Morphs/Daz 3D/FACS:
facs_ctrl_MouthFrown.dsf
facs_ctrl_MouthSmile.dsf
alias_head_facs_ctrl_MouthFrown.dsf
alias_head_facs_ctrl_MouthSmile.dsf
In order to differentiate and separate the smiles and frowns for their respective figures, I ran into another problem that I have not discovered the solution to yet. The facs files in the "My Daz Connect Library" appear to be encrypted and thus they cannot be edited. So unless there is someone out there who has discovered a solution to this then guess we are stuck not being able to separate the two smile expressions?
Okay os I got stuff sorted out, it appears that Genesis 8 Starter Essentials was installed both by Daz Connect and by DIM or Daz Central, I got rid of the Daz Connect Installation and now everything works as the original poster said that it would. So the important thing is to make sure you don't have Genesis 8 Starter Essentials installed through Daz Connect and make sure that it is installed either through DIM/Daz Central or manually and everything should work fine.
That you can do inside DS.
Load the Genesis 8 Female Dev Load into an empty scene, go to the Parameters Tab and locate the dials you want to change, then select the gog wheel and in the pop-up that opens, change the "Label" to something slightly different. Once you have changed the ones you are going to change, save the changes with
"Edit->Save As->Support Asset->Save Modified Assets"
Ps. Do not press "Post Comment" more than once, the site is just slow occasionally.
Thank you all for sharing this- especially those that also have some weird Connect/DIM/multi drives things going on too Finally have my expressions back!
I updated the instructions. Daz apparently renamed the folders, so I changed the instructions to reflect this.
