In the interest of full disclosure I should let you know that I am both technologically and artistically impaired. I do have a grasp of the basics though. When in doubt kick the cpu, yell at the monitor, bang on the keyboard, and pound the mouse against the mouse pad.

That said I am having an apparent problem in the workspace when I use my surfaces tool. Everything slows down. Is this normal? Also, is there somewhere I can get information on just what all that stuff is when you deal with colors and textures? Diffuse, ambient, bump, specular (sp?), ad nauseum do not seem to mean what I think they should mean.

Can't say anything about the surface tool as I don't really understand what you are doing.

But for the surface settings, there are some very good tutorials around. I think you should take a look at the free DS Creative Magazine.
