  • I restarted my computer, went back into DS, launched USC, and hit Build. Took 2 minutes, 46 seconds to complete. Same weird DS behavior afterward, going unresponsive every few seconds. CPU and RAM are fine during this time, but the GPU is spiking -- not staying maxed out but up and down between next to nothing and 90%+. When I manage to select the US object and delete it, DS returns to normal. Nothing unusual in the log. Asset loading seemed to be taking most of the time during the build.

You are not in Iray Preview mode are you? Or do you have the Aux viewport in Iray Preview mode?

  • Out of curiosity, I installed the latest DS beta and built the default US scene there. It completed in 3 minutes, 19 seconds (without the accelerator), and DS behaves as expected afterward. I am able to navigate the viewport and render the scene without issue. I then installed the accelerator under the beta and did the same thing. Build took 7 seconds, and everything was fine afterward.

Well, at least you have a working system again. The beta is working fine for me, so you should be good.

Did you check to see if you possibly had the Aux Viewport in Iray Preview mode in the old configuration? It sure sounds like something might be running Iray render while you are working. You aren't mining in the background or something are you? Do you suspect any malware of using your GPU for mining?

Amother thought. Octane Render is that cause of problems for many people. Did you have that installed in the old DS version but not the new one?

The viewport was in Iray preview mode. It always started up in texture shaded, but somehow it got switched around. I didn't notice, because nothing really shows up in the view at first, with the terrain elevation. Thanks for walking me back to the obvious thing that I never thought to check! Ugh!

Well, good! Nothing is seriously wrong. You found an easy fix.
  • And here's the finished render, a little patch of moonlight in the forest....

I just loaded a tree prop and rotated it 90 degrees. I UlraScattered some fallen wood and leaves from the Swamp bundle, which looked like similar color and shape to the brown tree vegetation.

Nice render effect, gives that anime feel to the scene. Thanks for sharing.

Very well done, I like it.

I love the display of the car dash. The body might be a bit too shiny for the environment, but great render.

That is a good observation about the truck shine! Another set of eyes is helpful. I just got KRDX Dirt FX. I'll dirty that thing up.

I don't want to be picky, but are the front wheels of the cop car above the road? Or maybe it's just the camera angle.

I like picky. I saw that, too. I think it is because the road is not flat. I intentionally created the dirt road feature with bumps. I'll take a closer look and see what I can do.

Round 2, with a dirty truck, a repositioned police car, and a police woman pose that I attempted to make a little less like she was being held at gunpoint. The truck dirt isn't real convincing, but time to move on... The police just washed their car before leaving the station. It only has a little dirt on the tires.

Did you use HDRI for the sky? Which one?

I wish there was a winter set for ultrascenery, but since there isn't I made one. I used snow shade on the grass and added a bunch of winter tress. And I think I messed around with the colors in Surfaces.

No, those are volumetric clouds in DS 4.20. I made a scene with just clouds and saved a render to use as a backdrop. This scene uses the saved backdrop.

That's a nice winter scene, too.

Yeah, I said something about testing the Tropical Bundle, but I got sidetracked on a couple of other projects. In the meantime, here's the opposite of the Tropics. I was testing something else, but it occurred to me that I could use it to make snow. This is one of the Willows ecologies and a plane, with a shader.

Edited to Add: I did not see that someone else was just trying a winter scene - I had not refreshed this page before posting.

@lou_harper and @paulawp, I think this is a case of great minds thinking alike. Or we are all sick and tired of the hot weather and are hoping it will cool down already.

Both of you have wonderful renders.

@barbult, that car looks about like many in Denver do after a trip up into the Rockies for a weekend trip. Loved how you placed the tree also, reminds me of these old streets around here after a wind storm, and the poor emergency services trying to deal. Great work.

I have a friend who is a tree specialist and he will go out around his neighborhood and help the retirees, infirm and poor with cutting up, trimming their destroyed trees for free on his own time. His crew will often join in too.
