Photorealistic interior lighting help

It seems the closest I've come to photorealistc renders is using outdoor HDRIs that have cloudy overcast light, or using paid products that let in HDRI through a window.

Does anyone have any tips for gettting photorealistic lighting indoors?

Every scene is different.  What's good lighting for a nightclub won't be good lighting for a kitchen.  A lot of photographs, especially "artistic" photographs, are made with spot lights, gels, gobos, flash, soft boxes, reflectors, etc.  Same thing goes for movies.   None of those involve HDRIs.

There are lots of photography and movie lighting tuts on YouTube and elsewhere.  I'd start there.
