Daz Studio 4.15 only rendering in CPU mode

Hi,

Today I finally updated to Daz Studio 4.15 and noticed right away it is no longer using my Nvidia 10 series card to render scenes. The annoying calculations at the beginning have gone, which is great, but now Iray renders in CPU mode and seems to ignore my GPU completely. I checked with GPU-Z and indeed Daz Studio is not using my Nvidia card.

I'm finding this incredibly frustrating. This is a simple test scene with a Genesis 3 figure, clothes, hair and a HDRI background. Nothing complex or resource intensive at all. Previously I had been using Daz Studio 4.10 and that worked perfectly well for me, and so I never bothered to upgrade until now. I'm always worried something will break on an update, and it seems my fears were correct.

I double checked by using another test scene (again, a single figure, clothes, hair and HDRI) that I knew rendered quickly in GPU mode before. Now that scene too renders in CPU, so now my rendering is much, much slower. To the point where I may not be able to use Daz Studio on this computer any more.

.

How can I restore my render settings to use my GPU and, ideally, reinstall an earlier version of Daz Studio that I know renders in GPU for me? Or is there something I am missing?

  • What is your driver version? The version of Iray in the current build of DS requires at least 451.48 https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/6380756/#Comment_6380756

    Thank you for replying, Richard.

I just checked, and according to GPU-Z my driver version is 26.21.14.3200 (Nvidia 432.00) /Win 10 64. So I am guessing that should be updated.

I am reluctant to update the GPU driver since last time I attempted this, my screen went black half way through installation. I panicked and forced my computer to shut down using the power button. Thankfully it was fine on reboot though. I tent to believe that if something works, do not fix it. Everything was working fine until I updated to Daz Studio 4.15

I will try again when I'm feeling less panicky. I am reliant on this computer so I cannot really risk losing it. Sometime in the future I plan to buy a second computer with a RTX 3090 GPU specifically for rendering, but until then I have to use this one.

Is there an archive where we can download and install previous Daz Studio versions? If not, I think one should be made available.

Edit: I should add that Dforce works perfectly fine. So at least that is still using my GPU.

  • dForceuses OpenCL to take advantage of the GPU, that is much less driver dependent (most relatively recent GPUs shoudl support an adequate version).

I think the screen briefly blanking is normal with a driver update - it temporarily has to disable the driver to update the files. If it stays off for a while that may be an issue.
