Unable to install daz + library to D drive
So I have been having an issue with my library on my D drive for a long time, I can usually get everything installed using DIM and all is working fine. Then at a later point, I'll come back weeks/month+ later to install something new and I'm unable to install the new asset. I would get below error
2021-01-11 14:14:06.463 Install Failed: Default Resources for DAZ Studio 4.9+2021-01-11 14:14:06.463 Installing: 47939-1 : dForce Starter Essentials2021-01-11 14:14:07.633 Could not extract file: D:/MyLibrary/Runtime/Textures/Daz 3D/dForce Starter Essentials/Mohawk/Face Female Mohawk [Hair Density].png
My fix for it was to just uninstall all assets via DIM, then uninstall DIM via Windows Apps list, and then delete everything related to Daz (AppData, Program Files and files on D drive), then I would just reinstall everything. It was frustrating but I don't install a lot and figured it not the worst idea to reinstall everything now and again anyway.
However, this happened last week again and I have been unable to get Daz installed via Daz Install Manager(DIM) or anything else either, postgre installs from the "default install sets" but that pretty much it.
I've always used DIM but have tried Daz Central(DC), I can get Daz Studio to install via that but that's because it goes to my C drive. I don't see a way to change the paths in DC as I do in DIM. I always set "package", "thumbnail", "manifest" and main library to my D drive in DIM, as my C drive is a 256MB SSD and just nowhere near enough space for my library.
So basically I could get it all set up on my C drive, as have tested DIM and not changing any paths like I said I usually do above. However, that is just not a viable option for me and I need to get it working from my D drive like I always had it before.
Last time I noticed this error below but not certain why I'm seeing it, I download via DIM and then try to install, so don't understand why download already exists

I'm at a loss on what to do or how to resolve this and finally given in an decided to post here :)

Is the D: drive present and writable?
I think so
I presume you do mean right-click on the drive, then user permissions?
I certainly haven't changed anything there since I had first installed Daz but not something I'm overly aware of as never really looked at that.
I tried again and forgot to mention, I do get a window popping up that states "the file cannot be opened for reading. The package cannot be installed"
Also, I'm certain that DIM tried downloading daz studio 4.15 a 2nd time right after it finished downloading it a first time, which explains the already downloaded errors.
Postgre and lessons are only 2 things that install fine.
So the drive iss till listed as D:, it hasn't chnaged letter, and you can place a new file manually in the target folder (in DS and also the location for your DIM downloads)?
yeah I manually create the folder for my library and it still listed as D:, sorry thought you meant user permisions.
Also manually created a new zip folder within the DIM downloads folder and within my library folder.
right now I think the issue is getting daz studio 4.15 itself installed and the initial files it adds to your library folder, once I get that done, pretty sure manual install is an option for everything else.
is there a way to manually download daz studio from the site? I always get taken to daz central instead of a page where I can manually download daz studio.
For the non-beta version of DS you can get manual isntallers, but due to a page glitch you need to expand the information section on the Product Library page to find them.
Well according to DIM, daz studio 4.15 is installing now
can see the error message regarding default resources which I assume is why my library folder looks so empty (folderview file attached).
can see in permissions view screenshot attached, that the full path and folder 4LayerUber is created but the permissions for write/read isn't allowed on the 4LayerUber folder, I presume write is the issue, so when the folder is being created it not adding permission to write the .jpg file? not 100% sure.
I've also included DIM screenshot, so can see Daz studio 4.15 is installed now, just need to figure out what going on with assets not installing.
Also, not sure where page you're referring to is?
thanks for the help Richard, this is super frustrating.
If the folder is being created you could try just dragging the files across from the equivalent folder in the zip.
Click the Description heading at the foot of https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_13176 and scroll down to find the manual isntallers, though it's better not to mix and match methods if DIM is now working for DS.
Default Resources are shaders and need to place some files in the shader folder created when Studio is installed so it won't work til Studio is installed.
DIM is downloading but not installing, so did consider that I could go into the folder with the zips and extract all into a temp folder, go into "content folder" and then move everything over to the library. However, I assume there is something I'll need to do within daz studio itself to get each asset showing?
Right so basically daz studio isn't installing right then? my DIM says its installed but my library folder is empty, ugh, frigging hate the new daz release lol
how do I change the library within Daz Central like I do with DIM? or is that possible?
I mean set where the manifest files, thumbnails and folder the downloads go to in Daz Central.
If I can get Daz studio to install correctly then manual install of all assets would work I'm sure, then I'll back up my complete library folder on an external HD which I can do now, as have 4TB external HD.
Daz Central is meant to simplify the process of installing, so it takes just one location setting and places everything within that. If you want more granular control you should use Install Manager.
This is part of why Daz Central is so inferior to Install Manager, it's lack of control but Daz studio did install via that, so why I wondered about it.
Also, DC is in no way simpler to use than IM, IM you just check all and install everything, DC list is bloated with info and would take forever to install your library as there no install all option I could see.
I have not had any time today to really look into my issue more, so still not got it fixed, my hands are tied until I can get Daz Studio installed and installed correctly.
I may need to contact support directly, as 4.15 release will install on C drive but it just doesn't like my D drive for some reason.
It is inferior for experienced users who want fine control; it is superior for new suers who just want to get started
But if it is aimed at newer users they will probably have fairly small libraries, so that isn't a major issue.
Still trying to sort this out but does look like I got 2 solutions here, not sure what happened but DIM is now buggy with installing to any drive not named C. Considering Daz Central doesn't have a way I can see to change where your library is and therefore you stuck with putting it on your C drive. Starting to think Daz themselves want you to install Daz on C drive only now but not sure, maybe I'm missing something but, either way, DIM + D drive = does not work.
Solution 1: I upgrade C drive from a 240GB to 960GB, that be more enough for my library to go on C drive, tested and got down to about 5GB space left before I confirmed 240GB wasn't big enough. That cost me about another £70.
Solution 2: Install Default Install Sets to the C drive with DIM, then download everything else in the library and manually extract to a temp folder, then move everything within "content folder" to a second Daz library on my D drive, which I then add as a new base directory in Daz Studio itself. On testing, I can access the second library via content library and load into the scene that way, It's a real pain but better than nothing. Still early in testing this, so I'm sure there be some unforeseen things that cause some issues but it's my best solution for now (I think).
P.S I really hope Daz Studio sorts DIM installing to D drive, that would be the ultimate solution, and soon as I sort out Library in just one location, I'm backing that up on an external drive.
Daz Central should allow you to set a base path, but how is Install Manager being buggy targetting another drive? I've never had an issue installing content to a secondary drive (which is what I've done since the beginning), though applications do go to C:.
I think I know what you mean in DC but I forget exactly what happened when trying option that you locate via the top right corner. However, I do remember I was unable to do the same settings in DC, that I usually do in DIM.
As for DIM, I never had a problem with it either until after the 4.15 update came out, as I said in original posts, been having issues for a while with installing assets after initial first library setup. But after 4.15 update came out, I was unable to even install my library via DIM at all. Also, DIM wouldn't even install Daz Studio correctly, so there something buggy with DIM and Daz Studio 4.15 on my end.
I got library reinstalled today finally but I manually installed it, which is how I install from now on.
