What to buy? 2x RTX 3090 or RTX 3090 + RTX 3080

Hello,

I am not sure what to buy - as I got one more slot for a second GPU (also RAM and cooling and space, etc.)

Can someone post an RTX 3080 image of the about your video card?

I had 4x 1080 Ti and could render 6 people only as I was out of something. No clue what... But, with the RTX 3090 I can render even 15 - 18 people. I was expecting the RAM to be better on the 1080 TI as totally I had 4x11 = 44 GB and not 24 GB as with the RTX.

Also, i had the problem with the 1080 Ti that some clothes with texture of 8000x8000 was too big to render - I had to cut the texture size to half.

Not sure where to look, the only thing I could come up with was the  Maxium Texture Size = 32768 x 32768 on RTX 3090 and 16384 x 16384 on 1080 Ti

Can someone post from 3080 or 3070 or 3060 to compare those MAX Texture Size?

Any input welcome.

thank you :)

    I can also confirm that:

    - on 1080 Ti the VRAM and  RAM were almost 1:1 --- so, if RAM was 41 GB used then the VRAM was also the same (approx.)

    - on RTX 3090 Ti I have around 65 GB of RAM to fill 21 GB of VRAM

    - I also render at 80% power as it takes only 1 minute more (at 1.000 Samples, 10 min instead of 9 on a test scene) and I like to keep the GPU cool, especially if the second one will be installed

I had to upgrade to 128 GB just to be able to fill the RTX 3090. Any idea how it will work with 1x 3090 and 1x 3080 (10 GB or 20GB) ?!?! The price for 1 x 3080 10 GB is so attractive... if all works the same as on the 3090 Ti

    Very interesting :)

  • Not sure I understand your ram to fill vram comments... all I can say is that If you're rendering with Iray, you don't want to mix GPUs with different VRAM amounts as they won't be shared, but rather duplicated, meaning that the whole scene will be loaded twice, once in each card. If one card has less VRAM and the scene doesn't fit, that card will be dropped by Iray and only the other one with more VRAM will be used for renders.

Oh! That was what I was looking for... So a 10 GB 3080 would be useless if I have a scene over 10 GB... I was hoping for at least a fraction of usafe. Thanks a lot, I know I'll not buy the 10 GB version.

That's no different than your 1080TI's if the VRAM is over 11GB. That is how Iray has worked since the beginning.
