Truley uninstalling files.

Here's the scenario.

I attempted to install some files, a character and clothing set, using DIM (in offline mode, having preciously dl'd the install files), into a separate library on an external hard drive (rather than the default library on my mac).

It seemed to work.

When I loaded the character, it said it couldn't find a texture jpg, and prompted me to locate it (It was looking in the default library). I browsed it to the file, and it continued loading, then told me it couldn't find some .duf files (that it was looking for in the default library, rather than the installition drive.)

The character loaded, though, mostly it seemed. When I tried to add the clothing, it gave errors that it couldn't find parts of it, and just loaded blocks.

I decided I would close Studio and go to DIM, uninstall from the side drive, and re-install on the default, just to check that everything was ok on a file level.

After reinstall, I opened studio, and the character icon (and the icons for the clothes) were blank squares, and when I tried to load the character, it said the files couldn't be found, looking for the extennal drive, and not where the files had now been installed.

(I should have taken screen shots of all these errors, but I didn't think to at the time.)

SO, how can I just get the program to fully forget it ever had those files installed, so I can start from the beginning?

It sounds like you need to re-import your metadata, the database still has the old address of the item I think.

I don't use a Mac, but on Windows, I would go to the Content Library pane, and use the drop-down menu to select Content DB Maintenance. In that menu, there is an option to reimport Metadata, that should fix it.

The character loaded, though, mostly it seemed. When I tried to add the clothing, it gave errors that it couldn’t find parts of it, and just loaded blocks.

When that happens, it is usually the 'data' folder that DS cannot find. What that means is, that your content libraries are not set up properly in the Content Directory Manager.

We do have a Mac user on the New Users Forum called Totte, and I'm sure he will be a lot more help to you than I am, just hang on for a little while.

It sound like you are using stupid Smart Content. Since Smart Content gets information from the database to determine what content is installed it is possible to have content that is not in a properly defined content library appear. When you try to load that content Studio doesn't know where to find the actual content files because the library isn't defined in Studio's Content Directory Manager.

Well, going into the content library tab, selecting everything and right clicking and choisng to remove orphaned files got rid of the old, and then I was able to load everything (to the default location correctly) with DIM.

I'll have to try to the external drive again. I realized I hadn't manually added the location of the external drive folder in the Preferences....I had read that DIM does that automatacilly, but that could be where this problem lies.

No that is a mistake a lot of people make, DIM does not communicate with DAZ Studio in any direct way.
