Do I need a zip program to merge on a Mac?

Ok,
I've jumped ship on the Windows side of things and in parallels am now using my Mac side.
Seems to render nicer anyway.
Question is...
Do I need a program to unzip content from a third party (that other store)?
WinZip wont install on my Mac OS X Version 10.6.8

Where do I merge it with? Every time a drag a folder over it doesn't seem possible.

I've looked in the forums but I think it's one of those basic questions that intelligent people already know.
If some one can state the obvious to a person that feels 5 years old today,I'd be over the moon.
Thank you:-)

Have a look here if you are on Mavericks : http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14224

I Googled 'Merge Folders on Mac' and got a load of hits for different versions of OSX.

From what I remember, Macs never used to use ZIP files, the Mac equivalent was 'SIT' and are produced by the Stuffit Expander, a Mac program now sold by Smith Micro.

We have some Mac users here, so hang on for a little while, and you will get the latest info.

OS X has Archiver built in, just right click the file or folder and do Compress...
Just doubleclick zip files to unzip them.
For other compression types I recommend stuffit Expander.

If you want to install zipfiles with content from other stores, feel free to use my free RendoInstall for OS X, it does a pretty decent job with it, otherwise you can use terminal tool ditto.
OS X had handled this with more or less success from 10.7, before that not at all. The problem is when the two folders merged are located on the same disk, this sometimes works and sometimes not. The reason is I guess that Finder has always done replace.

    Totte!!!!
    Thank you.
I'm in the middle of installing latest Maverick system and I'm guessing that's why i've encountered problems.
I'll wipe the many folders I have and wait till this downloads.
Fingers crossed it all works out

    Totte,
When these files are ready where do I install?
I attempted to drag and drop them in Daz but the application folder drops away

If you have zip files with content, those has to be carefully merged into your current "My Library" folder.
That's why I recommend using the DIM to install content from the DAZ store, or RendoInstall for other stuff. RendoInstall wants the zips and uses ditto internally to merge that into the existing ones.

I'll go to your page and let you know how I go..biggest thanks.

Having read about Ditto, I made up some services in Automator that let me install Rendo files..but Totte has some interesting software that I should likely look at :)
