Is it possible now to bring rigged characters into Daz Studio (with the new bridges)?
Hi all,
as you probably know, .FBX import into Daz Studio is completely broken. This is a big issue for me, since I always assumed it was no problem to bring my own rigged models into Daz via .FBX. It should be a very simple operation, but for Daz Studio, it is not. Going through Poser .cr2 seems to be the only way that is working for rigged models if what I read about this is true.
However, with all the new bridges, I was wondering if maybe the Daz policy on this issue has changed and real, functioning .FBX support is in the works? Or are there possible new ways now to bring fully rigged characters into Daz with the help of the bridges? Or maybe there is another older working solution for this?
I still can't believe that the .FBX import in Daz is just broken - but I like the DS environment with scripts such as the epic Ultrascenery and don't want to completely switch to Blender, iClone and Unreal just yet, so please someone give me some option here...
Thanks and have a great day!

The bridges go from Daz Studio to the target application, they are not (at this time) bi-directional.
Thanks for clearing that up! Are there any current plans on extending the bridges for importing or extending import functionality such as making .FBX import work?
From my perspective, it makes buying addons to use in Daz Studio much less interesting if I can't bring my own characters in (or have to re-rig them).
I guess someone needs to create an importer, I believe a third party could because if DAZ was interested in doing so they would have done so long ago
they did for Carrara
I haven't tried in a long time but I've seen others in the forum recently state it's not possible generally but does sometimes work for some FBX files.
LOL I wish it were that easy to go from Carrara to DAZ studio
(though via DAZcollada stuff actually rigged in Carrara itself works in D|S)
and the Mac users have to contact CS for it because they omitted it from the download for Carrara for Mac
not fixed that in over 7 years
Hm, thanks, maybe I try some different .fbx exports...
It's all so complicted... ^^
So, if I'm not mistaken, the options really are just these:
- rigging in Carrara and exporting to Daz
- importing rigged characters via Poser in .cr2
- and importing animations via iClone 3DXchange in.bvh
I tried rigging in Daz, but it takes very long and I had problems with smoothing and especially distorted parts... and it takes forever as compared to some other options. The character below was automatically rigged in Mixamo in seconds - up to the split in the arms of course. See pictures attached for my first character manually rigged in Daz with some distortions, one of the pics has some moss and weeds scattered over it with Ultrascatter to cover all the distortions due to my suboptimal rigging ;)
I just saw the mailer about the DAZ==Maya Bridge which mentions that rigging and animation done in Maya can now go to DAZ Studio???
Can anyone please elaborate? this would be a game changer for me if I understand correctly.
Apparenly it's now been updated to go both ways. I assume a user would need to have the current version of Daz Studio for this to work
Tbh I have absolutely zero interest in Maya with its astronomical pricing and its subscription model.
But I really hope all the bridges will be extended very soon, especially the bridge to Blender. Blender is getting a lot of support from everybody and her mother, including Epic Games (2019), Unity (2020) and even Microsoft (2020; "“Microsoft was on the wrong side of history when open source exploded at the beginning of the century, and I can say that about me personally” https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/18/21262103/microsoft-open-source-linux-history-wrong-statement) - I expect it to take over much more of the available market in the near future.
But how about ZBrush? Is it possible to rig in ZBrush and bring the rigged model into Daz?
So I tried to use a trial version of Poser 12 to import .FBX with a character rigged in Mixamo. For me, it did not work. It is importing something but I don't see the imported model. So after a few days of trying to bring a rigged character into Daz, I'm giving up.
For me, that means I'm mostly giving up on Daz Studio as a platform for animations for future projects and instead switch to iClone, Blender and Unreal for now, at least until a working twoway bridge is released that makes importing from Blender or iClone possible.
