smart content was showing and is not gone

I'm using DAZ Studio 4.6 on Mac OS X 10.9.

Everything was working fine and then (I must have done something) the smart content tabs under All in the left panel (I think these are called "vertical labels") were gone. I'm trying to get them back.

I've uninstalled and re-installed all my DAZ software and content but the problem persists.

I've also reimported the metadata and the problem persists.

I've checked that the DAZ Content Management Service process is running and it is.

How do I get back the vertical labels in the Smart Content panel?

If you have just closed the smart content panel, you can get it back from the menu Window -> Panes (Tabs) -> Smart Content

It may open as a floating window, but you can dock it were you want it.

Thanks, but the panel is open, it just doesn't any content except for the "All" at the top. Before, there were a bunch of choices below "All".

This then sounds like your CMS data base is not functioning correctly.

What version of DAZ studio are you using. Go to Help -> About DAZ Studio ...

The most recent version is 4.6.3.52.

This latest version supports a new data base, PostgreSQL as well as the older Valentina data base.

If you are using this release, you can go to Help -> Troubleshooting -> View Log Fill ..

    Search for something like this:

Connected to CMS: PostgreSQL 9.3.4, compiled by Visual C++ build 1600, 64-bit

That is the message in my log file on a windows machine. I'm sure on a Mac it would be different.

I suspect you are still using the older Valentina data base. One of the reasons DAZ is switching to PostgreSQL is the Valentina data base had a lot of problems with getting corrupted.

If you are still using Valentina data base, you might trying finding its log files and see if it is getting any errors. On Windows the log files are in the directory Program Files -> DAZ 3D -> Content Management Service -> vlogs. On a Mac these are suppose to be in /LibrrayDAZ 3D/Content Manager Service/vlogs according to the Mac FAQ.

The reason smart content is empty is DAZ studio cannot connect to the CMS data base.

Did you install the PostgreSQL data base?

If you are using DIM, it would be a product call "PostgreSQL CMS" that would have appeared in DIM around the time of the most recent DAZ Studio update.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to delete everything and start from scratch.

Note that most of the time, "delete everything and start from scratch" makes no difference (except it takes a lot longer to get ready for another try at running the program, and if your internet connection is bandwidth-capped, you just ate up a big chunk of your weekly/monthly allowance). The actual files for your content are almost always going to be perfectly all right. The most likely problem is going to be in your content database, which is completely separate and not stored in the same place as your content. Most of the time, all you need to do is delete this content database and rebuild it with the data that's already in your computer. (A corrupted database, which happens occasionally, is one of the more common causes of the CMS failing.)

    * In D|S, go to the Content Library tab (not Smart Content).

    * Click on the Options button in the top right corner (four lines with a little arrow). Click on "Content DB Maintenance...".

    * Click on the "Reset Database" tickbox, then "Accept". This will wipe-and-start-from-scratch only the content database.

    * Bring up the maintenance dialog again, and this time click on "Re-Import Metadata". This might take a little while if you have a lot of content, as it's rebuilding the database from the files extracted from your downloaded content installers. Still a lot faster than deleting everything, though.

    * Close D|S, then restart it. The CMS should now pick up the rebuilt database and begin populating your Smart Content tab.

    * As a precaution and to save time for when (not "if") this happens again, it's generally considered a good idea to save your database every time you make changes to it. You do this with "Export User Data" again in the maintenance dialog.

In this case I'm not sure this will work since DAZ Studio is not able to connect to the data base according to the log file.

I'm not sure which data base she has installed. In her first post she says the DAZ Content Management Service process is running, but the log file says DAZ Studio cannot connect to it.

If she is still running the old data base, then I would look in /LibrrayDAZ 3D/Content Manager Service/vlogs at the most recent log file and look for errors.

If she has installed PostgreSQL (perhaps that is when the smart content disappeared), then she could try uninstalling it from DIM. DAZ Studio should then fall back to the older Valentina data base and perhaps her smart content would come back.
