Daz Studio isn't a modeller. To create decent props, you'll want to use a modeling program such as Blender or Hexagon. You can create very basic props by mashing together primitives and deleting polygons here and there, but it's incredibly basic, and fairly hard to do anything even remotely complex without needing dozens of individual objects.
Visit the Silo thread in my signature and see if you'd like that perhaps for in the future. I did screen shots so people who don't own it can see what it involves, see if they're interested in modeling.
Could one of you lovely people direct me to a good source of tuition on making props/objects in Daz 4.6?
Thanks in advance,
G
I agree with everyone else who said that if you want to learn to make your own props, you're probably better off using another program because that's not where DAZ Studio's strength lies. However, to directly answer your question, there actually is a tutorial aimed at people who want to learn to make props in DAZ Studio: DAZ Studio Modeling. It's not cheap, but sometimes the vendor's products get deeply discounted during a sale.
thanks very much for all your help. I already have Blender and I'll follow your collective advice and use that. So, there's just one more tiny question...
What is the best format to use to import into Daz from Blender?

Also may be worth checking out Hexagon and Blender. Here is a thread with Hexagon tutorials http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/298/
There is a very interesting thread here where one of our PAs is helping someone who wants to make clothes in Blender (which is a free modelling app)
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/42075/
And another thread here which may have some useful info, although it is not being posted to currently

and one more http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/24184/
Another option, which seems to be popular in the Bryce Community, is Wings 3D
All that being said, check out Everyday Morphing Objects by MacLean, they're great when you just need simple props.
Edit: grammar
