If I download an item of clothing from a site offering freebies, how do I install the item? If it's a zip or what ever, where would I find the directory?
Hopefully there are folders in the zip. You just copy them over to your "My Library".
In windows, just highlight the folders and drag them to the "My Library" folder.
The My Library fold should be somewhere like this (Not the one in the Programs folder).
And to expand the confusion of what others said, You can even "Import" objects (OBJ files) for places other then Poser, somehow. It just takes knowing what the scaling is, and a prayer that the OBJ file is not coded some way Studio dose not understand. I found it useful to import some things, then save them as a "Scene Subset" so I don't need to go threw the hassle again.
your welcome geoff, glad to help out. Tho I try to think of myself as a mere mortal, without the desire for "powers greater then thine", lol.
There are for basic paths, the other three are kind of miscellaneous, and a different view of the four basic paths.
There is Daz studio formats, and there is Poser formats.
Under each of those is two more folders.
"My Library", and "My DAZ 3D Library"
"My Library", is where you can puts around and do stuff without causing to much harm.
(EDIT; Just don't add or remove files there outside of Studio, with studio running, It kind of turns CMS into a pretzel)
"My DAZ 3D Library" is explicitly for DIM to put stuff in, and for you to simply use the stuff. All the stuff you buy from Daz3D and install with DIM goes into this path.
(brb, checking for links)
The actual paths on your computer are quite different, Both of the "My Library" paths, are in that one folder you put free stuff in. The other one is, uh, I don't know where it goes, I haven't looked for it outside of daz studio.
There is an excellent wright-up by a few others explaining that whole tree in Daz Studio further.
PZ2 files are Poser-format files, they will appear in Poser Formats>content directory>Pose>some folder, as long as they are placed correctly (the Runtime folder from the zip needs to be merged with the existing Runtime folder in the content directory you are using).
The folders are now in my formats area, but no files appear inside. The files are .pz2. Could that be the problem?
sorry I missed that.
The contents of the zip "formats" gets copied to the "formats" in your "My Library folder", Data into data, etc.
If you highlighted all the folders from the zip, and dragged them to the "My Library" folder, it should have worked...
unless a folder in "My Library" inadvertently got highlighted when you did the drag-n-drop (That puts all the folders into the highlighted folder). Hope that helps.
(edit)
"O" hello chohole. yes I made that mistake before (and still do), trying to load something into a scene by clicking on it's color preset thing.
And you are looking under Poser Formats in the Content Library pane? It may help to post a screenshot showing the folder with the files, and the path to it, and a screenshot showing the folders in the Content Library in DS.
That's where I put them. The folders appear in DAZ, the files do not.
If you're seeing empty folders, but you know there are files in those folders, the most likely situation is you're looking at the wrong part of the Content Library tab. Poser files are invisible in the "DAZ Studio Formats" section, and D|S files are invisible in the "Poser Formats" section.
Alternatively, there might be something not quite right with your content setup. Can you open your Content Directory Management dialog, open the Poser and D|S sections, and post a screenshot?

Perhaps that may help to start with. Great PDF by Wilmap.

You are a God.
Thank you.

Note that different people package freebies differently. You will often have to manually move files and folders around.
Yes, extract to a dummy folder on your desktop and then move the files manually
I have similar problems. I read somewhere that DAZ 4.6 needs .duf format to use freebies. Is this so? And how do I convert them?
Studio is capable of using most Poser format figures and props.

Also I can only see scenes, poses and things I've made and saved myself in my library. Not bought content. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks Mark128, and the others for there help.
If you get lost in the "Poser Formats" path, ore else where.

The pz2 files seem to be working. But the missing ones are CR2 files.
If you have PZ2 files and no geometry or CR2 files, then possibly your freebie is an add on to the original model

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm well on my way to finding loads more questions!
Best, G
OK. The pz2 files do appear in the content library pane, but don't work.
The CR2 files don't appear there at all. The folders do, but they appear to be empty.
Not all of these are freebies, some are purchases from another site that doesn't have an auto-download tool.
The CR2 should be in \\Runtime\Libraries\Character\, and would appear in DAZ Studio's Content Library pane under Poser Formats>>Figures>
That's where I put them. The folders appear in DAZ, the files do not.
