Issues when rotating an object

Sometimes (not often, but it happens) when I am trying to rotate a person or object it moves in a wide circle rather than rotate on the spot. What can be done about this?

An issue related to that is that sometimes the Universal Manipulator Tool is placed quite far from the person or object, which becomes a real problem when it is located outside the viewport. How can I move the UMT closer to the object?

There's a recent thread on this here http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/44045/

This is an issue with where the Pivot point is and DS has the tools to move it called Joint Editor but that can be fiddly so what I do is Create a Null, place the null at the centre of the object and Parent the Object to the null and rotate the null instead.
