Texture editing question....

I am looking for information about editing textures. I am stumped on adding for example genitals to figures that do not have a premade texture associated with them specifically. I am attempting to take an existing texture and shop it to suit my needs. I have had instances where when I follow the recommended "copy the surface of the hips and past it to the gens, even that did not work, either the texture is shaded incorrectly or it is compressed from full body to just the groin, so its not mapping to the genitals correctly.
Any advice, explanation, or direction to tutorials that address this stuff would be greatly appreciated.
I am starting to think this is something where I need to use 3rd party software, export the figure with texture in place and edit the texture outside daz, then reimport.
thanks!

The copy/paste route works for the Genesis Female Genitalia and the Genesis 2 female Genitalia. It doesn't work for the male genitals, those need their own textures and making your own from the body textures would require a lot of image editing, with a great deal of back-and-forth to deal with the seams if you don't have a 3D painting application.

Ok, cool thanks, that jibes with what I have experienced.

    So I need a 3d painting application?

    Off to research....
