can i make a shadow less dark?

some of my shadows using a "distant light" are very dark. I tried shadow softness but that works mostly around the edges I think ?

Can I make the shadow itself less opaque?

    The setting you want is "Shadow Intensity", which is just above "Shadow Softness".
