mesh that cannot be made into clothing

occasionally I get a mesh that cannot be made into a clothing asset
not just with the bridge but my iClone method too
it throws an error with vertices and a series of numbers of them
the Eowyn overdress autofitted from G2F was the latest, the rest of the outfit was fine
I am wondering what causes this and if I can delete the offending polygons with the geometry editor prior to export and where to look

on a somewhat unrelated but still clothing note
I noticed I can skin stuff to the figures be it rigged or static mesh
still not sure of the limitations of this and it seems only be only non player animated meshes
when parenting you get the dialogue as to which part but you can also skin it to it so it is affected like weighmapped
