Is it possible to render just an object with a transparent background using masks? I don't need a background for a piece I am working on, and would like to use the image in other works!

@Topaz_Rose - yes, in two renders. Render your object with any background and save the image. Select the object and set the render mode to Object Mask (last arrow at left opens the dialogue). Save this mask as image. In any graphics package, you can now apply the mask to isolate your object.
