Hair (fur) for animals

Hi all,

Does anyone here specialise in animals? If so what do they do about "realistic" looking fur? I've been looking at Garibaldi Express and Look at my Hair but wondering if anyone has experience using either for animals specifically? If this is permissible I would love to see some examples. Also trying to find out if one is easier to use than the other, etc.

As far as examples goes you should check out this thread: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/39482/

And this might be of interest:
    The Garibaldi Thread: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/17751/
The Look at my Hair Thread: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/14818/

With installation of the Free LAMH Player ( http://www.daz3d.com/free-3d-models-and-content/look-at-my-hair-free-player ) you can make use of Free LAMH presets for exsiting DAZ animal products: http://www.furrythings.com/presets-animals/

And take a look at Allessandros shop: http://www.daz3d.com/alessandro_am

As far as i know a free player for Garibaldi isn´t released. So most Fur-Makers are focused on LAMH.

    Hi MN-150374,

Thanks for the link to the examples. BTW love your sabre tooth render. Fur on that is great. I have installed the LAMH player. So far can't figure out how it works. :) To be fair I only spent about 5 mins on it and got frustrated but intend to give it some more time over the next little while. If I can find some documentation that would help. But there really aren't that many presets that would be much use. Given that there are 300 plus dog breeds and the large majority are coated (long hair) there is only a short hair dog preset so not sure how much use that would be. I'm going to look at some of their videos to see if that will help send me in the right direction.

Thank you very much for the compliment! :)

The manual to the LAMH Player might help: http://www.furrythings.com/LAMHPlayer/LAMH_Player_manual.pdf

The free player has its own thread, there you wil find also links to youtube tutorials:
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/17802/

Don´t own LAMH or Garibaldi yet. I don´t know wich one is easier to handle. But have a look at both systems for a while now ... ;-)

I think RawArt has many animal sets with LAMH presets. So does Alessandro_AM, he made this: http://www.daz3d.com/real-fur-for-big-cats-2. Plus there are free LAMH presets on FurryThngs.com that you load through the free LAMH Player plugin! You need LAMH or Garibaldi only to make hair or fur yourself, loading already-created presets and modifying them is done via that plugin.

For art using such fur, check Deskridge's DA gallery. Amazing renders and a warm personality.

    Hi Cecilia,

Checked out Deskridge's work. Truly amazing.

I think perhaps I should be more clear that I am particularly looking for is realistic dog fur of which there seems to be a sad lack. Some good wildlife, rats and even cat hair but I've only found one LAMH preset for dogs. Which I tried in the LAMH player and couldn't get anything that looked remotely natural. I'm only a beginner with 3d renders and DS but even the dogs's fur in Deskridge's gallery look somewhat unnatural to me. I suppose I should note that I have been involved in showing and breeding dogs for over 35 years and also put out a magazine on traditional dog art. So perhaps I'm being unfairly critical. But I've yet to see any long haired dog such as Golden Retrievers, Poodles, PWD, terriers, etc. Whether either LAMH or Garibaldi will help me get that kind of look is really what I would like to know.

The New Users Help Section is a point to start your further investigations. ;-)

Your questions are really product specific. Maybe you should ask this questions to the users who have more expierence with these hairsystems.

As far as the LAMH goes, the vendors Alessandro_AM and Kendall Sears are active members in this forum.
Chances are pretty good that you will recieve answers directly from the vendors of the LAMH if you ask them in one of the threads mentioned above.

    Hi there,

Have put the dog fur issue on the back burner for now. After a google search I have not been able to find many if any renders of long haired dogs which seems to indicate it may be somewhat difficult and so out of my reach. :)

I only have mil dog LE so this is the wrong body shape - but it should give you some idea as to whether what you want can be done.

In this case, I used Garibaldi but there is no reason it couldn't be done in LAMH just as easily.

The furrythings website has several downloadable LAHM presets for existing DAZ animals, done by Alessandro. I haven't tried them yet but I do have his Raccoon and the fur on that is amazing.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

    Hi Gone,

Excellent! That really helps to give me an idea of what Garibaldi can do. I'll assume that your dog is a Schnauzer or along those lines? Was it hard to achieve?

I have the Millenium dog bundle but finding it somewhat hard to get the shapes I want as the Morphs available are somewhat limited. I find I'm a bit better at the posing end of things (I've managed to get some decent movement poses at the trot so far). Hair would go far to help hide some parts of the body shape that I can't get right .... hey that's what they do with real life dogs at the shows; cover up the not right parts with hair!! :)

The image I used for guidance was a West Highland White Terrier - but, yeah, it does look more like a Schnauzer.

I didn't spend a lot f time on it as I was only trying to show a style along the lines you were asking about. In fact, you're seeing pretty much all the hair I made. The rest of the dog is naked. :-)

    Hi Gone,

I am a Jack of all trades (forget the master of none please :)) So among my many jobs I am also a professional dog groomer. Pays the bills. :) I have certainly shaped WHWT with scissors which ended up looking more like Schnauzers and vis-a-vis. And that is real life. So you did a great job with it, imho. I would love to do something as realistic with the fur. PS a good many of the dogs I groom end up being naked except for the heads. :)

I can recognize a dog when I see one - most of the time. :-) Sometimes, I might even be able to identify the breed - but I wouldn't know if I was wrong anyway.

Like any tool, once you get familiar with the various functions, it's pretty easy to use. There really aren't that many functions to learn but they can do quite a bit once you understand them.

It really boils down to how comfortable you are with virtual styling.

I'd love to see poodles. Figures, morphs, fur presets, ANYTHING! Having one, I can't understand one of the most famous breeds is not represented by MilDog. I hoped for MilDog 2 instead of DAZ Dragon 3, but nevermind...

Still the LE but's pretending to be a poodle. :-)

I was curious to see if I could hide the pointy ears in the hair and fake the floppy ears with hair.

    Thanks for your efforts, Done!

Still, the look I'm aiming for is the natural poodle style, not the - pardon le mot - catwalk () one.

Gone, have been working on other projects but was going to give Garibald a try again and looking for your instructions. :) So just saw your poodle. Looks pretty good! Now if only I could get something to look even close I'd be happy. Have a great day.

    Which poodle?

The one on the previous page or the one in the Garibaldi thread?

The one on the previous page but now I'll have to search for the one in the Garibaldi thread! Actually I'm trying to find one of your posts on how to include texture maps. I thought I'd copied it somewhere but can't find it ....aargh. :)
