How to hide lights but keep them on

I'd like to keep the lights on but make the lamps invisible so they don't clutter the scene. Studio 462118.

I do not think that is Possible. I could be wrong but I've never saw it if it is doable.

In the Scene tab, click the eye next to the light to make it invisible and/or click the check mark to make it unselectable.

That turns the Light off in my DS not just Invisible as the User wants.

Yes I tried that but like Jaderail said, it turns the light off. I want the light on but the object (the picture of the light and its settings) hidden.

Ah, right, try going to the Parameters tab and setting Visible = No but Visible in Render = Yes

Thanks fixmypcmike, that causes the scene to become black just like turning off the lights from the scene tab. Is it possible to turn on the default light so the scene becomes visible?

Here's how you do it. Make your lights invisible, then go to Window > Preview Lights and toggle it off. Your lights will be off, but you'll have generic scene lighting to set up your scene. Once you're done, make your lights visible again and toggle the Preview Lights on again to get your own lighting back.

I wish it was as simple as just setting them invisible. Each light already has it's own on/diffuse/spec/off function, no reason to make turning it invisible turn it off altogether.

Thank you very much Vaskania, that's a simple and elegant solution. Much appreciated.

Not sure how it would work on other lights but for DS's standard lights (Distant, Spot, and Point) scaling to zero works.

Thanks, at last an answer that fulfills everyones needs. You want the ight and you want the light close to subject but you don't want to see the ighting rig in the render.

The other option is to use a Ghost Light. There are kits in the store, but the basic technique is:

    1. Create a primitive, such as a plane
    2. Set the primitive to emit light by setting the Emissive settings on its surface
    3. Position is so that it’s illuminating what you want to be brighter
    4. Change the opacity of the primitive to a very low number - like 0.00001

The primitive still emits the light, but it isn’t visible in the scene.

  • Hi everyone, I had the same problem but I found a solution that I wanted to share if other people needed it.
Select the camera or the spot in the "scene" tab.
In the "parameters" tab look for "Display" and set "visible in viewport" to off
