To freeze a shape from Smoothing

Is it possible, for a clothing worn by a figure, to be smoothed up and then for a morph file of the shape obtained to be created and loaded separately afterwards? 
Example: a character wearing a device under his shirt (a wire, with its control box). The outline of the box is visible thanks to smoothing iterations. If I keep the character in its chosen pose, can I create a morph of the shirt with that bulge from the control box, then get rid of the actual box, load the morph on the shirt and thus, have the shape and spare on the polys?
