scale short cut ?

Is there a key (similar to the way holding down shift while scaling in Carrara scales the selected objects equally in all directions)
for studio..or are the dials/or trying to get the mouse right in the center of that tiny little yellow center box on the scale tool the only way to get it done?

There should usually be a Scale slider that scales uniformly, as well as the individual axis scale sliders.
