Compatible 3D Figures Question for New User

edited December 1969 in New Users

So I have downloaded DS Pro and tinkered around with it. I am about to purchase some clothing but I need to make sure that I am understanding how this whole thing works.

When I look a the Compatible 3D Figures some indicate simply Genesis. Others indicate Genesis 2, Victoria 4, Michael 4 etc... You guys know what I'm talking about.

1: If I purchase: V6, M6 and Auto Fit will all the clothing be "compatible?"
2: Do I need Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female?
3: Is there a Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male?
4: Am I missing a piece to the puzzle?

The intention here is to export an FBX to use in 3DS Max Design 2013. I was able to do this , with some minor texture tweaking in Max, using the default content. Speaking of which - is the default content Genesis 2 male and female?

Thank for any guidance you can offer.

You don't need to purchase Autofit, it's built into DAZ Studio now.

M4/V4/K4 clothing will autofit to Genesis 1
Genesis 1 clothing will autofit to Genesis 2
If you want to use M4/V4 clothing on Genesis 2 you will need the V for G2F and M4 for G2M. If you're willing to take some extra steps, you can autofit M4/V4 to Genesis 1, save it as a Figure/Prop Support Asset, and then autofit that to G2, although with the double conversion there may be some issues that require fixing.

Ok, I'm understanding it a bit now. I see that Genesis comes with DS but I cant seem to find anything about how to get Genesis 2 - is that also included?

If I purchase the V6 figure build, is that only for Genesis 1? I assume there is a V6 for G2?
How do I know if the clothing is compatible with V6 for G1 or G2 if it only indicates that it is compatible with V6?

Type in Starter or Essentials into the filter and they will come up. V6 is a shape for Genesis 2 Female so needs to be purchased separately

There are 4 content packages that come with DAZ Studio:
    Genesis Starter Essentials
    Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials
    Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials
Default Lights and Shaders for DAZ Studio

Generation 5 figures like V5 are for Genesis 1
Generation 6 figures like V6 are for Genesis 2

    V6 for Genesis 1 doesn't exist, V6 is for Genesis 2 Female.

    OK now I'm getting it!

If I purchase V6 and M6 it will be applied to G2 within DS and any clothing I purchase that indicates V6 or M6 will be compatiple.

If I purchase clothing for anything below Generation 6 I will need either the appropriate figure build, or Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female/Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male.

    Yes?

Let's put it clearly: Gen2F, Gen2M and Genesis all have Starter Essentials in your account. Genesis is an androgynous figure you morph into anything - female, male, kid, monster, it doesn't matter (it is the best figure for fantasy renders in my humble opinion) - and without any purchases, it supports skins, hairstyles, clothes and poses for M4 and V4 (as well as K4 - you have those base female, male and kid shapes with it). V4/M4 Shapes for Genesis adds those shapes to Genesis as well as theoretically better autofitting. Genesis can also autofit stuff designed for Gen2F (and for Gen2M if I'm right - or it's the other way around: Gen2F and Gen2M using stuff for Genesis; anyway, get the free tutorials for autofitting from the link at the bottom of the post). You can buy Sickleyield's clones of Gen2F (I think so) and Gen2M to use their stuff with Genesis easily. Buying other shapes of generations 3-5 (5 being the one Genesis uses) expands your morph choices as well as adds UV-maps and better autofitting clones.

Gen2F is your ultrarealistic female figure. It uses its own UV-maps as well as V5 UV-maps out of the box. V6 - Victoria 6 - and any female you see with number 6 is a SHAPE for Gen2F. Some come with their own UV-maps (like V6), some don't. It can autofit Genesis stuff out of the box. To use V4 skins and autofit her items, you need V4 for Gen2F purchasable. Buying other shapes of generations 4-6 (6 being the one Gen2F uses) expands your morph choices as well as adds UV-maps and better autofitting clones.

Gen2M is your ultrarealistic male figure. It uses its own UV-maps as well as M5 UV-maps out of the box. M6 - Michael 6 - and any male you see with number 6 (so far, sadly, only Jayden 6 and Gianni 6 apart from Michael 6) is a SHAPE for Gen2M. Some come with their own UV-maps (like M6), some don't. It can autofit Genesis stuff out of the box. To use M4 skins and autofit his items, you need M4 for Gen2M purchasable. Buying other shapes of generations 4-6 (6 being the one Gen2M uses) expands your morph choices as well as adds UV-maps and better autofitting clones.

There are also tutorials on autofitting and making your own clones. You may be able to save some bucks if you master them.

PS If you're starting, get the freebies from here to expand your choices without becoming broke: http://www.daz3d.com/utilities-resources/interactive-lessons :). There is stuff for Gen2F and Gen2M including some real highlights.

Great! Thanks! I think I got it, but will proceed with caution - don't want to go broke...

Do I need to purchase and install M4 and V4 in order to use Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male and Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female?

No, you don't need to have M4 and V4..

As Mike said, M4 and V4 are not necessary. But I'll tell you a secret: what (for me) is the best solution to morphing Gen2F and Gen2M is Gen2X. It is a plugin allowing you to transfer morphs from Generation 3-4 onto Genesis and, if you own an addon, to Gen2F and Gen2M as well. You do have to possess the shapes, though. For instance, if you have a character for A3, which you'd like to use on Genesis, you have to own A3/H3 Shapes for Genesis, because only after dialing up the "legacy" shape, the transferred morph will look correctly.

For people new to this make life easier for yourselves by simply sticking with generation 5 (Genesis) and/or generation 6 (Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Male) stuff.

Yes that keeps things simpler but the fact Genesis 1 can use all V4 Skin Textures and Clothing (mostly, shoes are a pita) and all M4 Skin Textures and Clothing as well often confuses the issue. Some of the best V4 and M4 Skin Textures come with the Character shapes for the V4 and M4 figures. The fact those figures install but can not be used on the Genesis 1 figure is often the thing users misunderstand. Just Skin Textures for V4 and M4 work on Genesis 1 without using other tools that must be bought, the GenX plugin is needed to use those Figures fully.

Ditto. GenX - Gen2X being even better, I suppose - is a must-have for morphs freaks like me :P. But I also experienced that at least Scotlyn for V4 did affect Genesis - the injection was not done on purpose, but it changed the eyeballs (perfect for toon renders, it looked creepy!). So while you certainly couldn't use non-Genesis morphs on Genesis, transferring them via Gen(2)X is awesome.
