Smoothing modifier to react to inside of primitive (like a cube)

I am trying to figure out how to get the smoothing modifier to react to the inside of a primitive, like a cube or a sphere. I tried inverting normal of the primitive (cube) but that didn't seem to do anything. Is there something I'm missing?

What are you trying to do? Like an effect of something hitting the inside of a primitive and denting it out?

Think squishing something into a glass jar.
