Black frames when rendering movie

A few times now I have rendered a full set of a frames as a movie and a portion of it, usually the beginning half or so, comes out black. Not the whole movie, mind you, just part of it. This is pretty disappointing after an 8 hour render. It's not like it isn't rendering those frames either, because it is. Could this be a video compression issue? I'm using V.4.12.0.86. Any ideas what may be causing this?

It's generally best to render to an image sequence - that avoids any possible issues with compression, and allows you to rerender any problem frames without having to rerender the whole thing.
