Beam Exponent - What does it actually do?

I initially thought that Beam Exponent was a way to control the falloff of lighting from the light source but after a bit of testing this isn't the case.

Changing the setting definitely has an impact upon the emitted light but I can't quite work out what exactly it is changing and barely anything comes up when I search online. Can someone explain what it does please?

Thank you

My limited testing suggests that it further refines the light within the spread angle, i.e. a higher setting means a stronger inner beam and less illumination around that.

Yeah, it makes the light more focused like a lazer beam, or a UFO people napper beam.
