Need help loading *mc6 files into Daz 4.6

Hello helpful people!

Very new to the 3D scene...

I am enjoying the ride learning something new, but am a little frustrated that some content I am acquiring is not appearing to work.

My main issue is that I have purchased a prop that seems to load fine, but I am unable to load the *mc6 files (texture sets) to the prop, despite DS4.6 apparently being able to see these files in the content library.

The readme file included with the product has a disclaimer as follows:

Poser 6+ only. Materials are mainly based on Poser Nodes so will not work in DS.
Not tested or supported in DAZ Studio.

All other files that came with this package seem to work fine in Daz.

Is there ANY way I can alter the *mc6 files so they will work in Daz? I have tried to convert one to a *pz2 with no evident adverse effect, but still with no satisfactory outcome. I am competent enough to understand any code rewriting that may be required through notepad and really want to use the textures supplied, so any advice would be welcome.

Thanks
J

Being MC6 based isn't the problem, being based on Poser nodes is. Poser procedural shaders, as far as I'm aware, can't be converted to DS since there are no texture maps to work from. Your best bet would be to get some Daz Studio shaders and use those to re-texture the prop from within DS.

    What package is it?

I was hoping that was not the problem, Vaskania...

It is a jewellery box prop from Renderosity, created in 2013 by NikiSatez... The textures are really nice and I am not experienced enough to make my own...

Are there any good tuts on how to re-texture with ds shaders?

    Thanks

Re-texturing with DS shaders are just click and go.

I see that you're a PC member, some that spring to mind that are in PC that would work for a jewelry box are (depending on scene):

    http://www.daz3d.com/shaders-materials/tarnished-and-polished-shaders
    http://www.daz3d.com/shaders-materials/ingenious-rock-shaders
    http://www.daz3d.com/shaders-materials/magical-granite-shader
    http://www.daz3d.com/shaders-materials/dark-corrosion-shaders

Since these are pure shaders, they'll apply to anything straight within DS without having to fiddle with texture maps.

There are plenty more within the Daz Store that aren't part of the PC.

Link to all 4.6 compatible shaders: http://www.daz3d.com/shaders-materials?compat_software=99
Link to 4.6 Platinum Club priced shaders: http://www.daz3d.com/shaders-materials?compat_software=99&plat_club=23

The ones labeled in this category are labeled for Daz Studio, but may or may not work in version 4.6: http://www.daz3d.com/shaders-materials?compat_software=32

    Thanks for your help!

I have found the template jpg, have Photoshop and have a vague understanding of how to re texture that way (my son keeps on at me about the UV maps - goes straight over my head!), but I think that will have to wait until i up-skill some more...

Thanks for the links - I will have a dabble with the shaders and see what I can manage.

I appreciate your speedy response :D

It's because the item is a prop, in DS an MC6 only works on a figure.

You would need to edit the MC6 to make it work on a prop and change it's file extension to PZ2, but even then the result usually aren't worth the effort.

According to the readme the product does come with textures, so you can at least setup the surfaces manually in DS.

If you want to look at the template, load the prop in DS, go to the camera dropdown menu and choose UV View. You can select the view by material (click on each material in the Surface pane to see the template). That will at least give you an idea of how you could go about texturing it if you wanted to.

No wonder I missed those. Textures are usually listed at the bottom of Rendo readmes.

Thanks guys for your welcome advice! I am getting somewhere using shaders, but am hellbent on having a go at creating my own texture now that my curiosity has been tweaked...

Bejaymac - I did have a fiddle changing one of the mc6 files to a pz2 using some tuts around (learning the difference between a file that works on a figure vs a prop along the way), but it made absolutely no difference... :(

Maclean - thanks for the tip. I am starting to understand the UV thing my son keeps going on about (he is doing a degree in 3d modeling for computer game art).

So... if I wanted to have a go at texturing, I open the jpeg templates (found them earlier while poking around) in photoshop, layer some new texture images over the top of the map sections I want to retexture, save as a new jpeg and see what happens? Where do I put the new texture map - in the same folder as the one that actually loads?

Most of the tuts I've seen only tell you how to convert a MC6/MT5 to work on a figure, none of them tell you how to get them working on a prop.

DS4 can show and read MC6 files so there is no need to change the file extension (MT5 still needs changed).

Open the MC6 in a text editor (one with tabs is best).

Open the PP2 file for the prop in a text editor.

In the PP2 copy the line near the top that starts with prop (it's about 7 or 8 lines down from the top).

In the MC6 replace the mtlCollection line with the one you just copied from the prop.

    Save the MC6

Apply to the selected prop in DS.
