How to tell what's slowing things down?
I started setting up a scene using M4 and V4 in DS4.0 like I have done many times before. But everything seemed to be running at a crawl, much slower than usual. So I wonder, is there some function that can tell you what in a scene is slowing things down? Can textures slow things down?

What are your system specs, RAM etc?
Loading lots of textures can certainly slow down some systems. Have you tried saving the scene, exiting DS, and then reloading the Scene again, does that help?
Are you referring to a slowdown in general in the Viewport, when trying to position characters? If so, then teat would be a graphics card problem usually, since your viewport uses OpenGL
If you have been loading lots of different textures, then they may be held in memory, leaving less and less for the system to use, that is why I asked about available RAM. Saving the Scene and restarting DS, then loading the Scene again would cure that, but there is also a script that will do the same thing, it's called 'Purge Memory.DSA', and I will see if I can find a link to it. You may already have it in your My DAZ 3D Library > Scripts > Utilities.
I don't have purge memory, sounds like it could be quite useful. And yeah, it's the viewport that's slow. I'm using DS with only 2 gig ram, which I believe is the minimum (it's an old computer), so that is no doubt part of it. However, it didn't used to be this slow. I like to mess around trying lots of different textures for everything, maybe that's another part of the problem.
I see you are using DS4.0, I don't know if that script would work on it or not anyway, it is now part of the 4.6 releases, and comes with DS.
The slowdowns are annoying, I went through that for years until I got my new i7 a few years ago, what a difference. With the way things are today, very few people have the means to upgrade. Trying lots of textures will be part of the problem, and saving the scene, exiting and restarting DS is the crude (but effective) way to help with that.
Maybe someone will come along with a link to an older script which will do the same thing without have to exit DS all the time. I tried looking in Richard's scripts, but I don't see anything, and I checked AdamR's freebies as well. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Adam had a script originally for DS3 though it works in DS4, too. It may help a bit :)
Clear Undo Stack
I was reminded today (the hard way) that some clothing items have "Interactive Update" smoothing turned on, and this can bring everything to a crawl.
Yes Loading texture after texture to test will fill your free RAM and that can slow down the Viewport, a Clear Undo Stack in DS 4.0 would help that. As far as I know no V4 M4 items use Collision unless they were created in DS4.0 or above and then they would probably be DUF format which DS4.0 does not support. If you have Added Collisions to items by hand Turning that Off on all the items until Render time will help the Viewport speed.
Thanks for your info guys. One thing I think I need to do is defrag my computer, as I haven't done that for a few years! Probably going to take ages!
