HI all,

I'm very new to the whole idea of producing art through 3d software.

I just got the Daz3d software and I have the Genesis starter kits and I'm working my way through the vids and guide to get an idea of what Daz can do.

Looking on the marketplace, I see there are different models and packages for those models.

Some bundles are for Michael 4 but all I can see is Michael 6, are the bundles compatible with Michael 6 etc?

Also, does Daz3d work well in a previous version of Photoshop, like CS3 or CS4?

I have all the software bar the bridge for Photoshop and would like to get it all to maximise this as a hobby.

Thanks for your time.

H.

    Hi,

The 4 and 6 indicate different generation of the Michael character. Are the items cross compatible well yes and no.
You can use Michael 4(M4)(Generation4) items on Michael 6(M6) (Genesis 2) but generally you will need some utilities products installed to make full use of all of the items. And generally the item will always work the best on the figure it was designed for.

Have a look at this article for a full overview of compatiblity and known issues: https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/entries/20680798-Converting-Generation-4-Content-for-use-with-Genesis-1-and-2

Also, does Daz3d work well in a previous version of Photoshop, like CS3 or CS4?

The specs on the product page indicate: http://www.daz3d.com/3d-bridge-for-photoshop

The 3D Bridge for Photoshop is available for both Mac and PC, and Photoshop CS3 or higher. Gain higher functionality when used with Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Though I don't actually use the bridge myself.

Have a read through that article and let us know if you have any more specific questions.
    Welcome aboard ;)

    They should help.

    Thanks for the replies :-)

JimmyC_2009, am I right in thinking that the Genesis 2 female/male characters are compatible with previous bundles for Michael 6 or Victoria 6?

If I am then I can start buying a really long shopping list of stuff for my attempts at 3d art.

    Thanks again for the replies.

    H.

Yes, genesis now has two bases with the advent of Genesis 2. so Genesis 2 Male for M6 and Genesis 2 Female for V6.

Genesis (the original) is neither Male nor Female, and is really a unisex figure, which can be male or female, child, Gorilla, Anubis etc. etc.

The base for all Generation 6 characters is Genesis 2 (free download)
The base for all Generation 5 characters is Genesis (free download)

Earlier versions like Generation 4, are all morphs of V4 for the females, and M4 for the males.

Anything for Genesis 2 Male will work with Michael 6, and anything for Genesis 2 Female will work with Victoria 6. The reverse is usually but not always true - in the case of characters if the textures use the V6 or M6 mapping then they won't wrap correctly around the model without the required product, and if the shape is built on the V6 or M6 shape then it will work but won't look as the maker intended. Clothes and hair should work on the base figure (Genesis 2 male or female) without problems, however; poses will work but, as with shapes, may need adjusting to look right (if, for example, the hands are meant to be on the hips of Victoria 6 then they will probably be displaced using the pose with Genesis 2 Female - though you can adjust the pose to correct that).

    Hi all,

    Thanks for the info.

Do the Genesis models have more features to them?

The reason I've asked this is because I'm confused about being able to do one thing on the base model and other things on the genesis models.

I am not really sure what you mean here? The base models are V4 and M4, Genesis, Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Male

V4 and M4 are not free, Genesis,G2F and G2M are free, and are supplied with DAZ Studio, along with several other free items.

There are several different generations of figures which have been developed over the years. When the original Genesis was released, it used a completely different rigging system, and was a single skin mesh (not split into parts like generation 4 (V4 and M4 etc)). Clothing made for the base Genesis figure could fit all figures, man, woman, child, ogre etc., this was not the case for Generation 4 items.

In my opinion Genesis is better than Generation 4, and the newer Genesis 2 models are slightly better yet again.

There is a lot of free content that comes with DAZ Studio, there is a lot available for free, including morphs, on ShareCG as well, so there is no shortage of free stuff to try.

It all depends what you are going to use DAZ Studio for, what type of art you do. You could easily get by, in the beginning at least, with the base models and a few morph packages which will change their appearance.

I'm a bit confused by this one as well. Nothing doable in one is not doable on the others as far as I now. Which content works with which is different but not what can be done that I know of.

Are you under the impression that M4 and V4 are the base for everything that follows?

M5 and V5 have their base, that's 'Genesis'.

V6 has its own base that's 'Genesis 2 female'.

M6 has its own base that's 'Genesis 2 male'.

All three Genesis base figures are currently included and free.

Its always been the case that old stuff had to be converted to work with newer figures, the big change, from Genesis onward, is that its now much easier to do.
If you've got something older ( from V4 for example) that you really, really want to use then there probably is a way to do so.

    Thanks guys.

I'm still very new to Daz3d and I've only got the standard free stuff from the initial download.

If I remember rightly I've got the Genesis 2 models (m/f), and a base model (m/f).

I took a peek at how the Genesis model looks on screen and saw a big difference in appearance and that got me wondering my previous question.

Thanks for clearing it all up, I'll stick to one type of model once I'm done with all the basic tutorials.
