iMac with External Nvidia?

I am wondering if anyone is using external NVidia cards with an iMac? I'm on a mid-2010 iMac (yeah, still) and may be out of luck, but I'm wondering if anyone is running an external NVidia box of some sort for better Iray support. I understand that some Hackintosh setups use NVidia cards, but I'd rather not travel that road, if I do not need to.

Do note that CUDA on the Mac is deprecated for Iray, so forthcoming builds may not work even with an eGPU  (CPU would presumably still work). Honstly, your best bet - space permitting - is probably to put the eGPU money into a Windows box purely for rendering, leaving the Mac for the actual creation.
