Alpha transparency

You guys are going to think I never search for answers but I do, just spent the last hour and a half reading threads following on from forum search. I know the information I seek will already be here, I just can't find it.

Created a new image, set as transparent. Added text and saved as .PNG. When I loaded in as a texture in Daz (on a plane) it looked perfect. Rendered and the transparency turned white. Checked transparency in image editor and it was set as 255, 255, 255, 1.
(Not sure what the 1 is for, guessing it is to do with on or off.)

Anyway, any quick answers? If I can get this sussed I can save a fortune in polygons. (Ooh, mentioning polygons, how do you check your scene for total poly counts again?)

TIA, and I'm sure I'll also thank you later too.

You can use the image's alpha channel in Shader Mixer, but if you are using the standard shaders it's best to have a separate opacity map - make a copy of your image, fill the painted areas with white and the background with black, then load that into Opacity Strength

Perfect Richard, simple task for some clean cut letters. Headache ahead for a thousand leaves on a tree though.

LOL!! You want a headache. Model a tree with real leafs modeled on it. Tried it once, I never once thought of doing that again about half way down the first branch. I have Large respect for the PA's that do real modeled leafs now.
