Mesh lights only work when rendering

My preview does not show the emissions (light) from the mesh lights, even when I switch from texture to Iray. The only way to see how the mesh lights are working it to begin rendering the scene, and even when I have my screen set up with Iray it takes a couple of minutes before the first render even appears.
But even if it was quicker, starting a render every time I needed to check a small adjustment like trying to dial in the lights would multiply the time spent doing things I should be able to do in seconds

In the Draw Settings pane, while the iray Preview is active, set the Draw Mode to Photoreal - Interactive omits several things, including emissive surfaces.
