Man Friday's Meshgrabber: how to lock some faces so they don't move?

Man Friday's mesh grapper is an essential tool. But I cannot figure out how to exclude some polygons so they don't move when inside the sphere of the tool. E.g. I'd like to tack down (lock out from moving) all the polygons outside the boundary of a compact region of a mesh. Then I'd like to grab one polygon in the interior of the region and pull on it with the following result: The polygons on the boundary and exteropr to the region don't move at all. The polygons in the region are all displaced but deform smoothly outward from the grab point to the bounday, where none of them are displaced.

I tried using the geometry editor to hide the polygons outside the region. But that had no effect. They moved if they were in the sphere of interest whether or not they were invisible. Then I used the geometry editor tool to lock all the polygons outside the region. No matter. They all moved.

Is there any way to do what I want with mesh grabber? Any other way?
