Daz vs Renderosity?

I'm sure it's been asked before, but is Renderosity like a Daz 3D for Poser? Can models bought on either site be used in either Poser or Daz Studio?

Yes, but Renderosity also sells content for Daz Studio. It's just another marketplace that's non-program specific (as well as RuntimeDNA, YurDigital, Hivewire3D, and various others around the web).

It varies completely by the individual product. Some artists that sell DS-compatible products at DAZ, such as DM and ironman13, sell Poser-only products at Renderosity; some sell DS-only products both places, like me; and some sell Poser-only products both places, like Powerage and NightShift3d. Always check product descriptions before buying.

And of course when I say "Poser only" in this case I'm talking about material support; technically DAZ Studio CAN load .cr2 files and .pz2 materials, but the mats won't look right. It's especially not worth buying architecture sets that don't come with material support if you only use one program, because it will take forever to adjust them. A DS-only product usually cannot be loaded in Poser at all because it has only .duf or .ds format items, which Poser cannot load.

Please remember, artists are not trying to deceive you into buying something you can't use. But we do have to rely on your reading categories and descriptions before buying a product.

The big difference is you must learn the proper way to install content from other sites into DAZ Studio or they will never work properly or at all. I myself use content from many sites in DAZ Studio with no issues. The proper way to install what is called Third Party content is a skill all users should learn.

EDIT: Yes you should also Learn which TYPE products work in which programs. That is also Very important.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm going to learn to walk before I run, and stick to the dad studio products I can load with install manager. Somehow I got on a Renderosity mailing list and get emails from them, but I'll be careful to check what models there are Daz Studio friendly.

Renderosity definitely caters more for the Poser userbase. While there are items which will have Daz materials, the majority that I've found are almost exclusively designed for Poser. While they'll still work fine in Daz for the most part, materials may need some tweaking to look their best. Also evident is that support for the newer figures is very limited (by newer I mean anything using Genesis or later), and the focus is very heavily weighed on Generation 4 figures, mostly V4.

There are a few nice Genesis items available though. GaoDan is one vendor who's made some absolutely gorgeous Genesis outfits which convert very nicely to Genesis 2 as well. Still, when I want Daz products the Daz 3D site is my first port of call as it's guaranteed to have the lions share of compatible content.

Most of Powerage's gowns at Renderosity will work in Daz Studio 4. Sort of. Generally speaking, the gown itself will work fine but the materials can end up looking like something out of a bad LSD trip when used with Studio. Extravaganza III is a good example of this. I got round this problem by using Marieah's Fabricator.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

In truth any poser item will work, but if Poser based shaders were used all you will get is the mesh object and often it will load invisible. All that can be overcame with a couple of DS surface settings and the use of DS shaders. But then you will not have the same look at all most of the time as DS shaders will not do all the functions Poser shaders can at this time.

Shoudl work would be a better term. I bough the hull breach product a whil eback and recently tried to use it and ... well it didn't load in DS4.6 (it would in 3A). In the review section of the product there was a link to a fix, so it could be made to work.

Opps yes, should work. And I forgot to mention avoid all items that call for Poser Weight Mapping that is 100% different in DS so they all fail.

And where might we find a tutorial on that?

I for one am tired of being told Daz can't find 'x' file and manually pointing Daz to it only to have it ask again next time I load it . Why can't Daz update itself on the fly when you give it the new content location. Should not be too hard to program that ability in.

Check out RuntimeDNA, seems easier to find Daz compatible stuff there than at Renderosity.

All your content should be in one of two locations if you did a default install and or used DIM. Here is those two paths mapped in DAZ studio so they both load the content properly.

DS won't rewrite your content files by itself. You need to save a new preset after you give DS the new path.

As for installing third Party content go get this tutorial http://www.sharecg.com/pf/full_uploads.php?pf_user_name=wilmap&division_id=3

    To the OP,
I pretty new at this myself, only been using the Studio 3 months or so now, and I get most of my content from Renderosity,
As the Admin pointed out you want two main divisions to your content library; mine are.

My IM Content; - for everything loaded through the IM and
My Content. - for everything else.

This video will explain the everything else the relevant material is about 7 minutes in.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzlmi7xVWWA

but basically with most of the Renderosity zips, your just merge the runtime folder in the zip with the runtime folder in your
'My Content' file and it should work; with some older zips you might find under the root a Runtime and a MyLibrary/Poses folder.
and you would need to merge that poses folder by hand with the one under your MyContent folder. Sounds harder than it is and
it will open up alot of content artists for you. Just read the promo text carefully if the content is not DAZ compatible or tested it will say so.

One very important thing is as soon as you load any block of content, scan known directories for new content; then categorize that content right away. Most - Nearly all - Renderosity content is not 'Smart' so the Catagories tool is indispensable for finding the clothes, tools, props you've loaded.

Any guidance or advice for Mac users to help install Renderocity content. I stopped buying Genesis content there because I couldn't get it to work.

The process is the same but without a Merge option you must do more work.

What must be done is each new folder
    SAY Textures/New folder/Content
you have to place the New folder/Content into the texture folder yourself by hand. Each folder in each section would need done that way, until all folders that are new to your Content folder were placed into the very same folder properly for the new item

I thought a Merge feature could be installed or at least a equiliant existed for the Mac OS.

I'm a Mac user, and life got a lot better when I discovered a utility called Ditto GUI. It facilitates merging of folders, including nested folders, in Mac OS X.

Ditto is the recommended app on the MAC but as I say it can be done by hand if done carefully. I use a PC so I never think of Ditto when asked.
