@Barbult .. thanks. Yeah my story is involved.. I'd love to be a writer and have that talent. I think I may have a talent for verbal dialog but I'm not sure how technical I could be to write the degree of detail required for military sci-fi fiction... but anything is possible and I hope maybe someday. I do write a little but my time is so lacking le sigh.

@Byrdie: Thanks. That's nice of you to say!  There is definitely a rather long sci-fi epic in the works-inside my head at least. Maybe someday when I have more time to do writing and daz studio I can try my hand at it. I do enjoy illustrating their adventures

I hope there would be three novels involving Owen and Boyd and the alien invasion of earth and then three from Boyd's point of view as an intelligence agent after the war. I want to explore what happened to Boyd's older brother Tate who is a scientist and of course why the aliens really want earth. There is also the unicorn terrorist dude I created who hates genetically engineered people and Boyd  and Owen get married and Owen adjusting to civilian life....all many interesting aspects of their lives outside of the combat zone.

Oh, I completely understand that condition, it's the "novel-in-your-head" syndrome. Honestly it's got to be the most exasperating thing when there is so much of a story locked up inside my skull and I am just itching to get it out but there are too many places to start. I can never pick just one, so I just render tiny snippets of what's going on with my characters. Almost never does it turn out like I plan, they seem to enjoy whispering all sorts of plot twists right at the most inopportune moments and before I know it what should be a serious commentary on life, the universe and what-have-you has turned a 180 into all sorts of madcap mayhem. There's really no cure except to hang on for the ride and write. Or render. Or both.

Now ain't that a wonderful sickness we creative folk have?wink

I would not change it for the world. =-)  But I do admit my love of daz probably prevents me from developing my writing skills more. =-)

If you want to know a neat trick for parenting neck Jewelry to your Genesis 8 figure without needless distortion, and you own one of Feral Fey's pose sets which contain a vignette handle, (And you should own one of her sets because not only are her poses good, they are often unisex, and not overly pinup-y)  You can add the vignette handle to your scripts menu, and click on it in your scene tab. Parent the necklace to vignette handle, and then parent the handle to the neck. Once you do that move the necklace into position manually. Now you can retain the movement of the jewelry and have it all in one place. And if you need to move the vignette handle to move the jewelry you can. Of course, if you want to move more than one piece in different directions, you'll want to put it on a different handle.

In this image I've parented two M4 gold chains and two M7 necklaces to the handle. I can now get free movement of the necklaces without the parenting issue of conforming to the pecs or distortion by outfit. Add if I want Boyd's head to move forward and have the chain sway naturally to one side, the handle can do that. All without sticking to the chest.

You've done an excellent job with transferring Boyd to G8.  Looks awesome, Serene.  Great tip about the props, too.  I'll have to try that idea.

  • ByrdieByrdie Posts: 1,783

He looks marvelous. I always wondered how to keep things like dog tags & long chains from digging in to the chest after I've morphed my character, many times I gave up thinking it was the morph since they always seem to hang right on the plain base. That little trick of yours will save me much stress ... and put a few dollars in Feral Fey's pocket since now I simply have to have those poses. smiley

Yes I like that feralfey makes poses that are gender interchangeable and doesn't sexualize her female poses so that they look like they have spinal disorders. Her poses are also  affordable as they are frequently pc items

this method for necklaces works to prevent the deformation of autofit but you will still need to move the necklace so it hangs naturally but at least the jewelry is not distorted or glued to the chest bone.

Unfortunately autofit from gen 7 to 8 is not kind to necklaces... which is a shame.

He is a bit bulkier than previous generation Boyd as gen 8 Michael has a larger head and larger bulkier body than any of the previous generations. But I like the look and it is the best I can do

What is a "vignette handle"? I have a dozen FeralFey pose sets, but I've never noticed anything like that among the pose thumbnails. What is an example of a set with a vignette handle?

  • Worlds_EdgeWorlds_Edge Posts: 2,152

I too thank you for the tip and would like to know more about the vignette handle.  I have FeralFey poses and don't know what the handles are (though I have read references to them here and there).

    Beach Front Promenade Poses https://www.daz3d.com/beach-front-promenade-poses

Has the vignette handle. It is included as a bonus item. You can find it in the Feralfey Poses folder under genesis 3.  It is a prop that you parent your characters to so you can move them around easily within the scene. It works okay for props too.  I believe it is just an invisible null but I like it.

I thought it came with other sets as well. But I can tell you it is in that set for sure. It is mentioned on the product page.

Edit:  looks like the image below. I apologize if I misrepresented this item came with every set. I think I've seen it in a couple sets but now I'm not sure!

I want to know which set(s) of poses has a vignette handle as well as I looked yesterday and could not find a product that mentioned a vignette handle among Feral Fey's offerings in the DAZ 3D Store too.

    Thanks.

  • Serene NightSerene Night Posts: 17,647

It definitely comes with the beachfront Promenade poses.

Thanks. I don't have that set. I'll try your technique with a null and add the pose set to the wish list (I think it is already there, actually.).

I don't have the Promenade set but I have the vignette. (Yet to try out Serena Night's suggestion) Here is the path -

So I did a search again, this time just on : Vignette Handle and it turned up these:

    https://www.daz3d.com/aslan-theater-performance-poses-for-genesis-3

    https://www.daz3d.com/feralfey-s-ballroom-dance-poses-for-genesis-3-male-and-female

    https://www.daz3d.com/ss-marcoor-medbay-medical-poses-for-genesis-3

    https://www.daz3d.com/sporting-golf-poses-for-genesis-3

    https://www.daz3d.com/classic-pin-up-sitting-poses-for-genesis-3-females

I read all the descriptions & they all include the 'Vignette Handle'. Those are quite good pose sets & only the golfing one is expensive.

DAZ 3D Store oddly did not show this product on search although it lists the Vignette Handle as part of it:

    https://www.daz3d.com/beach-front-promenade-poses

(it wasn't filtered out because I own it either)

Ah, I thought I'd seen it in several products. I suspect it overwrites itself when it installs to avoid multiple copies. Those are all the more recent poses so that makes sense, since it wasn't in earlier pose sets.

Good, the med bay poses are already on my list as I own that set. I'm hoping to pick them up along with the lab props and a few other goodies during the PC anniversary sale, they usually have a sci-fi category as part of it.

This is my first attempt at a Gen-8 Owen. In this image, Owen is leaving a doc-in-a-box clinic and Boyd is waiting to pick him up. Boyd's none to pleased to see that Owen hurt his leg while he wasn't around to watch his back.

Yes Owen has no shoe. I couldn't find a single tennis shoe that didn't load as a set for Gen 8, so I rendered this, then made some alterations which I didn't like, always intending to render a shoe on the foot.  Unfortunately I made a bad save, and don't have this specific angle to render the shoe. So, no shoe! But I seriously intended to put one on him!

The clothing set is MEGA Wardrobe Male with the combo textures. Very useful set!

    nice render

  • ByrdieByrdie Posts: 1,783

laugh It would seem that Genesis 8 male is cursed to be shoeless, even when he has a pair of his own to put on. Mega wardrobe looks good, I've wishlisted it for pay day as the credit card ran screaming over the hill and the debit card fainted after last night's Daz binge. Oh well ...

Great little story you've got going on in this one, especially like the subplot of the two sailors trying to chat up the girl, at least somebody will get a happy ending. Owen will probably have to wait till his leg gets better ... and Boyd lets him out of the dog house.

I have issues with a lot of 3D shoes because pa's often make them in sets, and you cannot hide one without taking in geometry editor. This doesn't work for me if the character has a cybernetic limb, or is getting undressed or has his leg in a cast. Yes, I realize I can use geo-editor to hide it, but I still would love some individual shoes.

Some pa's.... Do offer individual shoes. Aeon Soul for example.

So far, though, all G8M's shoes come in pairs. So Owen will have to brave the streets of the vice district- shoeless.

The girl had a more prominent role in my previous render. I had originally rendered her standing against a street pole, while the two sailors attempted to chat her up, and Owen faced the camera. But, I switched camera views and liked the back view more because of the glass doors and the way the light looked. The woman wasn't visible sufficiently from that angle... So I had to move her and she became small and distant as a result.

One thing I'm surprised with is that I had to add more luminance to a lot of stonemason's signs. They did not glow enough. I do like the way they look though- But emissive lights are hard on my computer and the render took a while, I like the way the lights show through Owen's ears though. Neon is so colorful.

Yes, Boyd likely is upset with Owen, but also himself.

Really nice render.  Love the scene.  Great job on the lights and atmosphere of the scene.

  • Serene NightSerene Night Posts: 17,647

Thanks! I really like the vibrant color of the emissive lights. Owen being so pale is perfect to shine those lights on. In hindsight, I think I would add rain and misery outside to give some flavor to the street. Might be challenging through glass though. I may eventually have to pick up a rain prop, but so far I haven't thought the ones I've seen looked too real.

This one looks like the cover of an old Men's adventure magazine from the 50's.  Anyway, really really, really like the IReal Animated Ocean Water system. Definitely the most realistic water plane I have ever seen. This is somewhat close to my first render on the thread. I have a thing for ocean monsters I guess. This one is the modular mech squid. I bought it and never did anything with it. It works great though upside down if you need some tentacles. Plus they are easy pose!

That IS great looking water. Now you made me wish I bought it in Fast Grab.  (You cost me a lot of money sometimes!) laugh

  • Serene NightSerene Night Posts: 17,647

I really hate most 3d water but this product I overlooked because it seemed marketed for animation which I do not do. Big mistake!  The water plane is great and well worth the price for realistic sea renders.

  • ByrdieByrdie Posts: 1,783

:sigh: I passed on that too because I thought it was for animations only and I don't do those. Wishlisted immediately now that I've seen this. Might even pick up that mechanical beastie too since it apparently has more than one use. Gotta get me some more critter bots, I haven't bought any since D-Spot and that's positively ancient.

I like the pop of red with Boyd's trunks, too. It is a nice dynamic image.
