I'd try DA, you can find a lot of artists to commission there. Quite a few are my colleagues, the thing I'm very proud of :). What kind of an illustration are you looking for? What style? Maybe I could help.
Thanks Cecilia, I just posted about it at DevianArt ;)
Basically I'm looking for illustrations similar to those in card games (ie. Magic: The Gathering), but only the character/monster/creature on transparent background. This is for a 2.5D dungeon crawler game. No animation. I'm not expecting to pay a lot per illustration, but I can buy many, and variations of the same character.
Do elves suit you? I admit I made a lot of them for a stock project, they have not been published yet, most are 1000x2000 or 2000x1000 in resolution, all use UberEnvironment lights with the highest quality settings. I intend to give them away on my DA page, but if you'd like to take a sneak-peek look, I can arrange for that :).
Yes, indeed I'm looking for everything related to classic medieval fantasy (ie. Tolkien). What I need is full body chars with no background. While exploring DA found this gallery:

But let me see your work, I'm interested. If you can show a few low quality images with watermarks that would be great.
Thank you, I will write you a note with links to some of my recent works. I can also attach some less shiny samples of fantasy renders (although I'm not sure why you'd prefer low quality over high), but watermark would not be convenient for you, so I won't include it. I am sure about fair play :). When do you intend to release the cards? What races interest you? Fortunately, I research fantasy as a literary genre, so feel free to talk in our common sociolect and I'm sure we'll understand each other perfectly :)!
