Drumset assistance
Hi friends, I purchased Rama drum kit, the drum kit is freakin awesome !!! Many parts to drumkit, so I decided to just see if I can bring the snare stand to life. I applied mat, UE2, spotlight, distant light, many different lights that came with different content, various coordinates, etc..... made many adjustments in the surface tab, higher ambient setting, stand turns white opposed to chrome. Even tried Luxus, which renders decent, no adjustments. But nothing I do seems to render the same as promo image. If anyone has any tips, would appreciate, thanx.

That looks like it lost its reflectivity on allot of the bits. or is that not supposed to be a chrome 'Snare-stand'?
are the bits set to metal UV, with any reflectivity at all set?
Let me look at 'session drummer' real quick, as my father studio is a town over. The pics are not much, however the gloss and chrome is missing.
Found a Much better real Yahama Snare stand pic.
Hi Z, thanks for chiming in. Cool ! your dad is musician to. Thanx friend, no metal uv set. That's how a drum stand should appear. Yeah, think I figured it out. I went into diffuse, added texture. Work'd a charm. Now the problem is, finding chrome or metal texture, that will work nicely. First time, I've worked with content other then character figures.
That is so much better. it even looks 'used'. My dad is a recorder more so then guitarist, or is he more of a guitarist enthusiast, lol. He is very good on the six and 12 sting. Me I'm more of a hobbyist Jazz Bass, amateur classical composer.
In any case, tweak the reflectivity just a bit, once you get that into a scene, it looks good.
metal texture hint, "free metal texture"... There are lots of them. Or take a picture of something in the house and use that.
"O" that black cone bit above the hinge, is cast iron, exactly like a cast iron pot or pan.
Hi Z, thanx buddy, but I was unhappy with project, so I tossed it, start all over again. This project really work'd my brain, Lol !!! Finally starting to get it. Had to add distant light, 2 spotlights, many varying light coordinates, a million and half lighting/surface tab adjustments, phew !!!! Slowly beginning to look like a chrome stand. Not very cooperative with UE2,.
Awesome ! both of you are musicians. I love jammin to Jazz, most favored are The Rippingtons, I enjoy classical to, I jammed professionally, have vid on youtube.
Thanx for all your input buddy, now I have to figure the rest of the kit :-)
Finally ! Lol !!
Perfect! As we say on the Ham 'fldigi' nets here, superglue thews software settings right there. lol.
Save the thing as a 'scene subset' so you don't have to mess with all them settings every time you want the stand in a scene.
UE2 by itself will not give you the specular needed to look like metal. However AOA new Ambient light will but it looks like you got there in the end, nice job.
if you want real reflections you need something in the scene, lit on the side facing the surface, to be reflected.
and on the note and I have started to use Reflection only, turning off Specular completely but as Richard said above it does need a complete environment to reflect.
Hi Z, thanx truly friend, using shaders did the trick. I do need to learn, how to save subsets.
Hi Richard, thanx for the tip.
Hi Pete, thanx for the tips/compliment. Learned alot from you friend, reading/viewing your renders. I discovered UE2 does not work well solo. After a few hrs reading, I learned about shaders, that seem to do the trick. Now, I'm brainstorming to learn shaders. I certainly will check out AOA lighting this evening. Yeah, the drumkit/parts load solid black.
I am amazed how much surface settings makes a difference in renders. I spend majority of my time in surface tabs :-)
Good you are finally getting to the place you should be. :) We tell you a lot but when you come to these realisations yourself it really helps more than we can help you.
I have a thing for surfaces, my very first render had me playing in the surfaces pane and haven't stopped. As you say it makes the world of difference. Many people keep banging on how important light is. I say there are 3 things that needs to be right, Lighting, Surfaces and Composition, get all 3 right and you shouldn't go wrong.
Thanx a million Pete, for all you've done assisting, you were not kidding about reading/learning/experimenting. I've done more reading the past year, then 16 yrs of school, Lol !!! I've sort of became a surface tab fanatic, Lol !!! Nothing ever look'd right to me, no matter how many lights I applied, then surface tab grasp my brain, I'm truly enjoying surface tab settings, see what I can come up with. I discovered surfaces tab in your Uber area light tutorial :-)
Yes, lighting is important, but you describe it best. Lookin forward to your next render friend ;-)
be proud of being a surface fanatic, you are will thank you for it. Man I can't wait to see what you come up with now.
Thanx Pete, yeah I've been brainstorming surfaces tab, very powerful tool. Be gentle on my newbie renders, Lol !!! Take it easy friend.
So on a completely different note in regards to the Rama Drum set.. firstly.. awesome set.. but I couldn't help to wonder if there'd be more additions to this kit.. I myself own a Tama Superstar kit (with the starcast mounting system) along with various other cymbals which to my slight disappointment weren't included in this set.. even though understandably cymbals and toms can be re-sized in daz which is cool but one (or two in this case) cymbal/s I was looking forward to seeing (perhaps in a second expansion maybe? *hint hint*) was the china cymbal... of course.. I was also wondering if at all thought of, a Rama double kick pedal.. if need be I'd gladly supply pictures of cymbals or hardware including the china and Evolution Ozone Sabian cymbal.. (even though most of the above mentioned can be easily found on google lol).
Of course there's always electronic kit expansion ideas... my current and soon to be set up will be incorporated with a mixture of acoustic drums as well as electric to add additional sounds to my existing Tama kit, with sounds/cymbal/drum pads from my electronic Sound-X drum kit... (maybe not to the extreme of Neil Peart) but you get the idea..
I guess part of if not the entire reason why I'm asking or suggesting (heh) is, I'd love to personally recreate my kit and immortalize it in 3d, as well as perhaps give myself further design ideas on expanding my drum kit :D
Feel free on messaging me Ravnheart in regards to the above.. I'd be more than happy to help in anyway way at all possible in suggesting or supplying images for an opportunity to recreate this monster kit dream of mine in 3d lol :)
Anyway.. enough dribble from me... awesome stuff though :D
Cool ! Another drummer. Appears your describing Mark Portnoy's monster kit, don't think DS preview has enough viewing area to render his kit, Lol !!!!!! I have a Tama 9 piece Grandstar kit and Roland 8 piece.
Upload a pic of your kit
Anyway, you can contact Ravnhart over at Rendorosity, replies in timely manner, within 24 hrs.
Here's an image I did of dbl bass kit.
The most recent rehearsal pic as the others taken since have been mysteriously wiped from my phones existence...
I too have dual bass drums, how ever no way of fitting the second in to my tiny little Hyundai Lantra. Hence the Speed Cobra double kick pedal..
Aside from the metal Tama Tymes, the rest of the kit is a Tama Superstar birch kit and the cymbals are all Sabian... as much as my little car will hate me... there's still room for expanding :P
The electronic kit I have is basically two standard five piece kit's of the same make (Sound-X) put together to make one. 6 toms, 2 snares, 2 bass drums and 6 cymbal pads. Of course... I haven't got myself a semi to be able to cart both the acoustic as well as electric kits around at one time, nor have I really planned out how to combine them both as such.. I have had them set up together when the kit was slightly smaller in scale.. but not with the monstrosity I currently have :P
Thanks for your help though I'll message via there =)

Awesome ! your kit is a beauty :-) Most use dbl pedals nowaday's, easier to lug around. Buddy of mine has Cobra kicks, and luvs em. I use Pearl kicks. Your kit can be created with Rama drums. For bar between pedals, use a primitave to attach pedals, a cube might work. I may take a shot at it, if I come up with anything decent for dbl kicks, I'll upload pic here. Thanx for sharing
Haha cheers... but it's nowhere near complete yet :P It can be done with Rama.. the only "authentic" difference is that my kit doesn't have the tom arms in the bass drum.. It's easier to maneuver everything to be in the right spot with out them in the bass drum.. besides.. the second bass drum (if I ever get a van) will be mounted as a gong/floor tom... and the 14" Floor tom converted into a 14" mounted tom, then the 16" f/t will go over next to the hihat in place of the 14" F/t.. there'll also be an additional paragon hihat (13") and 6 various other cymbals including a paragon 20" china, a 14" china and a few other added ones.. then maybe I'll be happy lol :)
But yeah I'll probably give it a shot over the weekend to see what I can come up with my self :)
Hi there. I am so sorry I never saw this thread :(
Are you still interested in more addons for the drum set? Janne was wanting to do a addon with the starcast mounting when he was making it. He is also a drummer :)
I can talk to him and see if he still wants to do the addons :)
ABSOLUTELY! :cheese:
And it's okay in regards to not seeing the thread.. I've been quite busy myself with work and the band too now haha
I'd still be happy to help if needed with pictures :P
