Problems with missing files

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I can't find exactly what I need. I have purchased a lot of content from DAZ, for DAZ Studio 4.6 Pro. I do all the files that it says are needed and make sure they are compatible with Genesis or Genesis 2. But once loaded I find they do not work and require another character. I have added Victoria 4, 4.2 and 6 as well as the morphs for Genesis and Genesis 2. But things still don't work. I can not find any of the Victoria stuff I downloaded unless I go into categories and most of the items I have do not work. I keep adding things that say they will help but then they don't and I am wasting money trying to get it to work.

Can someone help me with this, and as I am not incredibly techie can it be in user friendly words. :) I don't want to get anymore content only to find it doesn't work at all.

Thanks in advance for any help for an incredible newb!

Yes a simple "Readme.txt" would be very helpful for us new to daz. Stop buying stuff for a sec, and as you did, Ask.

Some characters do need other base characters to work, and some "Morph" packages as well. I spent a month, just trying to figure out what was needed for the Wachiwi character befor installing Daz Studio last weak, and it still didn't work out of the box.

Compound that with No "Victoria 6" search refinement option at the store, nudge, hint, please put that there daz.

First off, there is a base of stuff that should come stock with the first install of Daz Studio, did that all get installed and working? You should have that Barefoot dancer (Fiey Geniesis), surfer guy, and the dragon slayer stuff (Basics versions of I think).

Then use the search here for the character of interest, some one else may have posted the infor you need, otherwise ask.

The number after the name is very important, characters meant for Victoria 6, will not work out of the box with older versions of Victoria (to an extent).

And some older stuff doesn't work with newer figures, to an extent.

"O" and the Genesis Base figures. There should be a base Genesis 2 figure set as well included with that plethora of stuff the installer puts in.

6 characters are for the "Genesis 2" and I think most of the 5 characters are for Genesis 1 (Just "Genesis" on the Studio screen).

I 'think' the V4.2 predates Genesis, I don't know what she needs if anything.

I prefer to use the thing on the left to bring up stuff, as the "Content Library" on the right is confusing at best.

This is a screen-cap of almost stock install of Daz Studio 4.6 (Except Victoria 6, and Wachiwi). Hope that helps some.

I spent almost a hundred dollars on morphs, only to find the only way to rid my chars of that impossible thin tummy, is with that "Scaling" thing. The other Morphs are useful, not complaining.

There can be a lot of confusion to a relative newcomer to all things DAZ and figure-related.
Without going into a full-blown history (that has been covered elsewhere on the forums) Victoria 4.2 (often just Victoria 4 or V4) predates Genesis. And Genesis predates the the Genesis 2 Female and Male figures.
With just those names it can get a little confusing, but add in teh fact the Genesis can, natively use skin textures made for V4 (and often items sold for Genesis actually used the V4 UV map - the UV map being the thing that tells the program what bits of texture file go where on the figure). Then if you add in the fact that there are V4 legacy shapes for Genesis (and Genesis 2 Female) ... I have to stop and think and regroup my thoughts from time to time and I have been doing this for some years!

Just because Genesis can LOOK like V4 (via the legacy shap morphs) does NOT mean the figure is equivalent to V4 in every way. There IS a lot of in-built compatability with V4, but whilst very good it does have a few issues: mainly in the area of boots and long skirts/dresses.

Genesis 2 (both male and female) is another figure, very close in basic nature to Genesis, and has backward compatabilty to Genesis items. And that is another area of confusion! Just because something loads, and works, on Genesis does not mean it will on Genesis 2. Confused? Yeah, it can be a mess!

The simple answer (and once the penny drops it IS simple) is to look at each item in question and see what figure it is natively for, and/or what UV maps it is associated with.

With the basic essesntials loaded (no other products), you will have Genesis, G2M and G2F.

Native V4 items (skin, clothes, etc.) will load be be pretty good on Genesis.
Items that are specificaly for the Genesis figue (or use the Base Female UV map, or whatever it is called) will load and work on G2F.

That last one has a caveat, just to make it even more confusing! The file types used by Daz Studio have undergone a few changes over the years, from the ones used by the Poser program (.pz2 for poses and textures, .cr2 for figures, etc.) to .dfs and now, finally to .duf. The wrinkle with G2M and G2F is that, unaided, it will only accept skin textures accessed via .duf files.

The good news is that there are products available to make life simpler and add compatability - letting you add V4 textures to G2F regardless of their original format. In fact that is two products - one that supplies the UV map to allow G2F to 'understand' the V4 textures, and the other to apply the .pz2, .dsa, etc., based textures. You don't have to have that second product, it's 'just' an automated way to bypass the hassle of doing it by hand.

Just bear in mind each of V4, Genesis and G2F are different figures. Each one is, under the covers, regardless of appearance, a different figure, each one has a different native way of 'looking at' skin tetxure files.

I prefer to use the thing on the left to bring up stuff, as the "Content Library" on the right is confusing at best.

Something that might cause confusion — the "thing on the left" won't always be on the left, some people use different layouts or have customised their layout, so just saying "left" or "right" doesn't mean anything.

Also, note that not everyone uses Smart Content. Not all DAZ content is set up as Smart Content, and any freebies or stuff from other stores are almost guaranteed not to be set up. Every bit of content you've installed, though, will appear in Content Library, that's a direct view of the actual files stored in your computer.

Thanks everyone, I will try to sort through it all. I will look at the tutorials and see if they help. And hopefully get things sorted. :)

Right, this seems an ideal thread to piggyback onto. I have these problems too, I would say that 50% of non-smart content has me tearing my hair out from time to time. Especially frustrating when you've actually spent money to get , not freebie stuff.

How can you tell Daz where to find a file it says it can't find... (see image).

I'm assuming you installed with DIM since you are using its default location. Have you tried re-importing your metadata? You shouldn't need to with DIM installs but worth a try

If you go to the Content Library pane, does My DAZ 3D Library appear under DAZ Studio Formats?

    Richard : Yes

Frank : Not DIM, installed by default before I knew you shouldn't use that location for manual installs. (Re-install in my own Daz library you think?)

Try the re-import metadata first. You have to do that a lot of time with manual installs
